I had a couple of copies before I even had the Call of Cthulhu RPG - it was a tantalizing look into a new gaming space for young me!

For Warhammer 40,000 this issue had Commissar Training Squads. It had a write up of Games Day '89 inc Golden Demon winners. But the cover and inside was all about a preivew of HeroQuest!

A mini mystery from 1986, in the letters page about Asgard Miniatures - reports said it was still taking orders but nothing was sent out? (Asgard Miniatures is interesting in the history of Games Workshop #Warhammer as it was co-founded by Bryan Ansell, who left to join GW's Citadel Miniatures)

Spotted another connection of Ancient Greece and Warhammer 40,000 - The Lion's Gate. Both a spaceport on Terra and a structure on a Bronze Age era citadel of Mycenae origin in Greece. So added it in - exploringwarhammer.substack.com/p/the-odysse...

May 1986 - White Dwarf 78 would feature ‘LE10 Power Armoured Marine’ as a single limited edition. Also sculpted by Bob Naismith, however the design of this miniature is quite different from LE2 (the first Space Marine) and would also be different from soon-to-appear Space Marines coded ‘C100’.

June 1985 - WD 66 has a review of #Warhammer Fantasy Battle 2nd Edition where it gets an 8/10 review. This is the same score as the original 1st edition’s review in White Dwarf 43, though by a different reviewer. There is also an article on ambushes in Warhammer.

There's no no shortage of ancient Greek references in #Warhammer 40,000; Space Marine chapters such as Sons of Medusa, The Minotaurs & Iron Snakes. The Iron Snakes chapter hail from the homeworld of Ithaka, which echos Ithaca a Greek Island that legend tells of the home island of the hero Odysseus.

In White Dwarf 103 from 1988, we’ll see an adverts for Rhinos and for Space Marines Rhino crew too. Plus there was also a guide ot them in the article ‘Rampaging Rhinos’. Chapter Approved would update the vehicle rules from the base version in Rogue Trader. [1/2]

Citadel continues to grow its product line with more support for WFB and with the launch of the first supplement for the game, ‘Forces of Fantasy’. It was then later released as boxed combined with WFB 1st Edition.

Artist Tony Hough's first professional art was with Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader. He did a number of now iconic pieces in that era. Interestingly, one used for 1988's The Book of the Astronomican was cropped for the book. The full piece is pretty amazing. Here's the cropped version... [1/3]
