Today, Ukraine's flag is hanging again from my hometown Bremen's Town Hall. Слава Україні! We are thinking of you and hope that the incoming German government will support you better. (The photo below is from an earlier visit.)

Blimey. Asked about Trump, Merz says he’s in close contact with European leaders about becoming “independent” from US (and confesses “I never thought I’d say that on TV show”). Casts doubt on value of NATO summit in June. This from a die-hard Atlanticist. Things are moving fast.

Kein Wahlkampf war so kurz wie dieser, keiner kam mir je so lang vor. Nie kam mir Deutschland so klein vor. Nie hatte ich so viele Sorgen, dass das Angebot nicht den Anforderungen entspricht. Selten wurde über so vieles nicht gesprochen.

A heartfelt Merry Christmas to all who tested, masked, or decided to skip a party because they were sick. Especially to those who were not convinced this was really necessary but who did it regardless because of they love and respect their Covid-concerned friends and family.

Forward part of the motor ship “Quarantäne” at pier in Bremerhaven (Germany). Dusk. Christmas tree on deck. Now a museum ship, Quarantäne used to be the service barge of the port’s health officer for more than forty years.

Somehow it never occurred to me that a major campaign issue for one of the national parties of the United States in 2024 would be general opposition to a triumph of modern medicine that saves something like 4 million lives worldwide every year and dramatically reduces childhood mortality.

Plea to my fellow academics: CITE YOUR SOFTWARE. I'm hearing from several young scholars that they've given up on writing R packages and such because nobody cites them. Yet download stats and rep materials clearly show that they are being used. This is plagiarism, and it slows down innovation

Mein Kind hat einen Migrationshintergrund und ist nicht in Deutschland geboren. Wenn ich das in Diskussionen über “die Ausländer” einbringe, kommt seit jeher: “Nee, ihr seid ja nicht damit gemeint!”. Stimmt. Weil wir weiß sind. Ihr seid Rassisten. Und damit ist jeder mit dieser Denke gemeint!

Tipp: Die Nutzung des Wortes "skeet" für Posts auf Bluesky (analog zu "tweet") ist, ahem, *nicht* zu empfehlen. Die vulgärsprachl. Bedeutung fehlt im Standardwortschatz, der im Englischunterricht gelehrt wird (bis vor kurzem auch in meinem) - in dem vieler internationaler Mitleser/innen aber nicht..

Die FDP labert immer von „Leistungsbereitschaft“ während ihre Spitzenpolitiker*innen erfundene Fakten raushauen, die schon Schüler*innen mit ersten Recherche-Skills so niemals in ihre Referate packen würden.
