I loved Sam Neil. A fantastic actor who made everything he was in better. I really appreciated how he brought a relentlessly weird energy and offbeat sense of humour to every role. His characters could be loveable or terrifying, and often both. A proper artist.

There’s a great David Bowie exhibition at The Lightroom near King’s Cross at the moment. An immersive collage of light and sound projected on 11ft walls covering 360 degrees. The closest thing we’ll ever get to seeing him perform live again. Made me quite teary. Recommended.
Finally saw My Neighbour Totoro at the Gillian Lynne Theatre last night. The only word I can use to describe it is magical. A really classy production top to bottom from an insanely talented Japanese team. The puppets are jaw dropping.
All Double Fine has ever done is try and kindle a little joy and beauty in the world. It’s absolutely disgusting that Microsoft is doing this. Hope Tim can find a buyer / take them independent again, but there’s no world in which this doesn’t severely hurt the studio. Sorry guys, you deserve better

Went to see Stephen Fretwell play the Southbank Centre last night. I’m a huge fan, and every gig feels like it could potentially be the last one he ever plays, so it’s always a treat. The great David Thewlis was also sat in the row next to ours, which was an unexpected bonus.
Obsession is fantastic. The best execution of this horror concept I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a LOT. Every choice from the casting to the choice of lighting to the music is absolutely perfect. Deserves to make a billion dollars.

One of the many problems with using gen AI for creative work is that you can only generate things using the existing data the model is trained on. It can’t create anything truly new or original, or think outside the box. It is the box and it doesn’t think.

I really like Kneecap anyway, but Irish Goodbye might be my favourite thing they’ve ever recorded. They should lean into their softer side more often imo.

I really liked The Drama. I knew next to nothing about it going in and was very pleasantly surprised by the complexity and audacity of the superb script. The acting was also excellent. One I’m going to think about for a long time. Avoid spoilers like the plague.
Even putting aside the fact that reboots of 20 year old shows are almost always terrible, rebooting Buffy was a particularly bad idea. The inconvenient truth is that Buffy is Joss Whedon’s vision and without him, it’s just not the same show.

It’s not perfect (none of the adaptations I’ve seen are) and there isn’t enough cruelty or ghosts, but it’s pretty good 🤷♂️

This remixed version is stylish, captures the novel’s big emotions and almost all of the important themes, and has some fantastic visual storytelling.

Watching Scrooge. Alec Guinness as Jacob Marley is one of my favourite performances by an actor in anything ever. The rest of the film is…a bit dated, but its visions of hell and spirits suffering eternal damnation are still absolutely chilling. Bring back terrifying Christmas movies for kids.
Whatever Tarantino’s faults, he’s an absolutely exceptional filmmaker. Delighted to finally see the incredible Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair in the cinema after a 20 year wait. An excellent way to spend 5 hours at the movies.
This is cultural vandalism. It will be a terrible day for cinema as we know it if this goes through.
