I wrote about it back in THE LAWMAN*, but one of my favorite things about the first Judge Dredd story is that they introduce this guy in a badass riding pose right under the title... and than kill him by the second page * copies are found... nowhere!

Tom Shapira @tomshaps.bsky.social · 23h agoDesolation Island by Patrick O'Brian The charm of these books is that they are a slice-of-life stories... Simply set in a world of 'adventure fiction.' There's a main plot in this book that is pretty much ignored and the big action climax happens 2/3 of the way in. It's all about the characters.
Take your pick of the 'Russian Greats' - at best you get 'religious-nationalist zealots' and at worst you get 'raping your serfs while writing about the beauty of peasant life'
