On the train to NY for AEOUD, I coincidentally passed the world’s largest steam locomotive, the Big Boy (yes) 4014 at the “world-famous horseshoe bend.” It’s frankly heartwarming to see all the train nerds so excited with their cameras out. (It is largest by a margin of about 10%.)

It’s a crowd of hundreds of people standing at the “world famous horseshoe curve” in Pennsylvania. They are exclusively train nerds or compliant others who were dragged along, since there is no reason to be here other than to look at trains. In the background, the Big Boy 4014 is billowing steam, about to charge up that 1.8% grade.Bild

I try not to allow much "political messaging" thought into my brain but I still get irrationally upset when an obvious pun is missed. How do you run a story on Trump's net approval among Gen Z dropping 42pp (!) in a year, but miss the "Not Z" angle???

It's a screenshot from CNN. A newscaster is agape at some statistics, though it's implausible that he hasn't already seen those statistics before going on the air to talk about them. The statistics: In Feb 2025, "Gen Z" polled with +10pp net favorability for Trump, and in Jan 2026, they polled at -32pp. Donald is inside the infographic. They choose a picture of him that makes him look like he just got some bad news and is pretending to know what it means and that he is tough. Six stars in the infographic signal "America." To be honest, the design makes it look like Windows 95, with the blue title bar and white text, and the color swatches that let the anchor annotate the infographic make the whole thing feel a lot like Microsoft Paint. That's fine with me. I'm just upset about the missed pun.

I understand why people are concerned about space rock 2024-YR4, which by taking the cumulative impact probability of 0.28% and multiplying it by a velocity of 13,260 m/s has an expected damage of 37 m/s. But even more concerning to me is 2016 WN55’s expected damage of NaN!
