Old furniture is better than new furniture for interesting supply-chain reasons I've gotten into before. No other old consumer goods are "better" than new consumer goods. Consumer preferences have gravitated towards buying cheap replaceable things instead of expensive repairable things.

My sister works in the Suffolk County morgue. She had to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, from March through June of 2020. Here's a video of the morgue she was working in in April 2020, with trailers full of corpses outside of it.

I realize the Europeans have largely gone to bed, but: I got bitten by a dog yesterday and had a bad reaction to it and ended up throwing up all night last night. My wife made me go to the emergency room; I've gotten IV fluids and an abdominal ultrasound. This is what I had to pay. I have insurance.

I've always been struck by the historian who said that things don't fall out of living memory when the last living person who witnessed an event dies; they fall out of living memory when the last person who *spoke to* a living witness dies out. My grandmother watched Babe Ruth play in person.

My neighborhood was one of the very first planned suburbs to exist - the idea arose on Long Island in the postwar period, and my house was built in 1960 - and I'm eternally grateful that they hadn't figured out this garbage yet. 780 sq. ft. house on a half- acre of flat land sounds absurd, and yet.

AI clearly works extremely well at lots of things and it's great that people put it to those uses. My problems with AI are: a) the money just doesn't make sense; and b) people think that because it's good at some things it must be good at everything, and that's just not the case.

TRUE STORY: I once met a Wall Street guy who told me he'd always voted Republican until 2016, but he one time played golf with Trump in like 2005 and Trump openly cheated and kicked somebody off the course for mentioning it, and nominating a guy who'd do that was his breaking point for the GOP.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion at all, and I think it's actually extremely predictable consumer behavior seen in light of the Stanford marshmallow experiment and the economic concept of satisficing.
Max Dubler 🏳️🌈@maxdubler.com · 3d agoI think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.
A lot of the responses I'm seeing to this are interesting to me. Maybe I just spent too much of my childhood around abusive men, but it would never even occur to me to respond to this on its own terms. This is such obvious abuser-voice that I wouldn't have thought that it even needed to be said.

I've been around dogs my entire life, and had never been bitten (enough to break the skin) by one until just now. Was waiting to pick up my dogs from doggy day care and a Black Lab just took a chunk out of my hand. My wife wants me to make a deal out of it but I refuse because all dogs are good dogs
The thing I don't understand is that his ex-wife's father is a U.S. Senator. If I had the power of a U.S. Senator and somebody treated my daughter this way, their life would be ruined. Forget prison: they would no longer be able to have a bank account or a driver's license or a job or a home. Ever.

This is an absolutely fantastic story that every lawyer should read. This article could become a really interesting book. A lot of law firms talk about "firm culture" but at the end of the day businesses exist to make money and it's silly to pretend otherwise.

The NYC pied- a- terre tax creates an unusual tax situation for mega-rich people. Most every tax in the US has phase-ins so that a marginal tax rate can never exceed 100%. This isn't true for NYC resident taxes: if you live in NYC 182 days a year or less, you pay $0; 183 or more, you pay full tax.
Geoff Bowser@geoffbowser.bsky.social · 4d agoIt made me laugh thinking how many of these people are now going to claim in legal documents that they have lived in NYC more than 50% of the time for years and wind up owing a ton more in back taxes and fees because their tax returns say otherwise.
Tip that could maybe save a life: If you can't find a doctor with a particular specialty who's taking new patients, go to your local undocumented immigrant community and talk to them. You will find the best doctor you've ever seen; they do not take insurance but their prices will be reasonable.

There's going to be a version of the PS6 that will be a handheld capable of playing at PS5 quality. This is going to be a HUGE game changer for the industry. But unless the AI bubble pops, anything with RAM and SSDs in it is going to be so expensive that casual gamers won't bother trying them.
