This problem is actually what made me increasingly withdrawn from the hobby; my first exposure to ANY 40k was back to back readings of the 4th edition Tau and 5th edition CSM codex and my impression of the Imperium from the jump was "these are the imperialist bad guys" and I hated losing that (1/2)

It was a fun dynamic but noooo they're actually EVIL and SCARY now
