Shame on you SCOTUS: Trans Students Belong in Sports

Trans Up Front deplores yesterday's Supreme Court decision on transgender athletes participating in school sports. It is painful for many transgender and gender-nonconforming young people, families, and allies. Yesterday’s ruling focused on transgender women and girls but has the potential to affect all transgender and gender non-conforming athletes.

In West Virginia v. B.P.J. / Little v. Hecox, the Court said states are permitted to restrict girls’ and womens’ school sports teams to cisgender athletes without violating Title IX or the Equal Protection Clause. This is a serious setback. It gives states more legal room to exclude transgender girls and women from school sports.

But the Court did NOT say every school must exclude transgender athletes. That matters. States, schools, and communities still have choices, especially here in Illinois, where state law, school policy, privacy protections, and community support remain important.

This ruling also makes future legal challenges against the discrimination of transgender athletes in sports harder. Rulings like this have increasingly led to witch hunts and invasive 'sex testing' of all girls and women in sports, not just transgender players. With this ruling individual schools are given permission, with the backing of the Supreme Court, to continue invasive discriminatory practices that impact all student athletes while specifically discriminating against transgender athletes.

The work now has to be practical. Since 2020, 27 states have banned transgender women and girls from playing school sports. In the state of Illinois, the Illinois Human Rights Act and the Illinois State Board of Education provide protections for students. Students should know their school policies, save records if something happens, and reach out to someone they trust early. Parents, teachers, coaches, and allies should protect student privacy, use the right names and pronouns, take bullying seriously, show up at school-board meetings, and correct misinformation when they hear it. If you need support, Trans Up Front provides free advocacy services for any family in need.

This decision makes the work harder. It does not make you less worth fighting for. Stand with us and trans student athletes across the country on July 12th from 12:30p-4:30p in partnership with Equality IL and PHIMC on Montrose beach for a day of community where we say, loudly, “Trans students belong in sports.”

Harm Reduction

This training examines allyship
through a harm reduction
framework, emphasizing practical approaches to reducing stigma, increasing safety, and supporting autonomy within TGD/LGBTQ+ communities. Participants will explore how systems, language, and interpersonal interactions can either create harm or foster affirming, supportive environments.

June 25th (1PM-2:30PM): Understanding the Rapidly
Changing Legislative Landscape Impacting TGD/LGBTQ+ Communities

This session provides an overview
of current legislative trends
affecting TGD/LGBTQ+ individuals at the state and national levels. Participants will learn how changing policies impact healthcare access, education, public services, and community safety, while also identifying strategies for responding to and navigating these ongoing changes.

June 29th (10AM-11:30AM): Navigation, Resources, and Community Supports for TGD/LGBTQ+ Individuals

This training offers an overview of
affirming resources, referral
pathways, and support systems available to TGD/LGBTQ+ individuals and families. Participants will strengthen their ability to connect community members to healthcare, legal support, crisis response, housing, mental health services, and other essential resources.
