Hellboy study I posted in my originals section of my website. The painting that came from this study was used for a tribute show at a gallery in Los Angeles, CA

The first idea for the painting was about a man who turned into a large toad on his 37th birthday. He managed to keep his mustache and his nostrils. I included a pug dog for scale.
Just watched a documentary about Martin Short. His energy is remarkable! I feel lazy now. Worse than when Yoshitaka Amano told an artist friend of mine, “Don’t be lazy” coffee and drawing for the rest of the day!
When Bill was almost 50 years old, he was apprehended by Milwaukee police for stealing a Hormel Delivery truck. His addiction to SPAM nearly ruined his life. In later years, he was able to control his addiction with mushroom tonic and shopped at a Hormel store at the mall.
I was looking at He Who Gets Slapped(1924) Lon Chaney and lots of clowns.

An art career is often a unique series of circumstances that fell into place. Starting with being seen. I’ve met several artists who seem oblivious to how they arrived at their career other than “I worked hard”. One can “work hard”, but if no one sees the work, . . . A career it does not make.
The differences between a career in the arts and it becoming a “hobby” are some combination of desire, encouragement, and being connected to a community of sorts.
