Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning in Africa
🎓 The 2026 #TReNDCaMinA cohort has reached an exciting milestone!🥳😍 Congratulations to our students for completing an intensive journey in Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning held at Dedan Kimathi University, Kenya We look forward to seeing their impact in research and beyond. 🎉
Electromyography provides a window into muscle and nervous system communication. Gilgal J. Ansah, a PhD student at the @University of Pittsburgh’s Rehab Neural Engineering Labs, shared his work on neural interfaces, neuroprosthetics, and electrical stimulation. #TReNDCaMinA2026
Our #CaMinA learners explored the foundations of neural networks with @tomnotgeorge.bsky.social a postdoc @mila-quebec.bsky.social , connecting machine learning concepts to ideas from computational neuroscience. Thank you, Tom, for leading this intuitive session. #NeuralNetworks #AI #ML
Looking at these scenes, the FIFA World Cup may have just missed out on a few exciting talents! ⚽😄 Most importantly, our students and TAs took a well-deserved break to come together for a friendly football match. Some of the best teamwork moments happen both inside and outside the classroom.
Project Day🤩 is always a defining moment for our students at the #TReNDCaMinA Summer School, as they apply their learning through collaborative team projects. A heartfelt thank you to our faculty and TAs for their mentorship and support. Congratulations students. Graduation follows soon!🥰
AI is transforming the future of science. Our students learned from Prof. Ciira wa Maina, Director of DSAIL at the host university, DeKUT, and a #TReNDCaMinA 2026 faculty member, whose research focuses on machine learning. Thank you, Prof. Ciira, for sharing your expertise at #TReNDCaMinA 2026.
A valuable session today, as our learners engaged with a career-mentoring panel focused on research pathways across academia and industry. Thanks to Dr.Evren Gokcen, Ian, Millicent Ochieng, and Dr. Poornima Ramesh for sharing their experiences and career journeys. #CaMinA2026 #Research #Career
The best way for neuroscientists to relax? Get those dancing shoes on! 💃🕺🎶 Our students, TAs, and faculty enjoyed a refreshing visit to Ndunda Falls in Embu, complete with a joyful welcome dance, adventure, and beautiful moments together. Recharged and ready for the final projects ahead! 🧠🚀
🎉 TReNDCaMinA 2026 T-shirt Logo Design Challenge Winner! Congratulations to Alex Mutua, a student from AIMS Senegal, for winning this year's challenge! His creative design, selected through a community vote, will feature on the official CaMinA 2026 T-shirts. #CaMinA2026 #TReNDinAfrica
Classroom Icebreaker Bingo!🤩 A bingo card brought students, TAs, and faculty together through laughter and new connections. Each square on the card had a question about someone in the room. No clues, no shortcuts, just asking around, finding the right person, and writing their name. #CaMinA2026
Prof.Pedro Gonçalves at CaMinA2026, introducing our learners to #DynamicalSystems, using mathematical language to understand how systems evolve and interact over time. As a Group Leader at @vibai.bsky.social , his work connects Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning. #CompNeuro
@alleninstitute.org Institute back at TReNDCaMinA2026!🥰 We are delighted to host the team led by Saskia de Vries, alongside David Wyrick, Leila Elabbady, and Michael Buice, supporting our learners with world-class neuroscience datasets and hands-on guidance. Continued in comments 👇
Wrapping up an incredible first week! 🎉🌿 Intensive learning, a birthday celebration, visits to DeKUTkenya Coffee Research Farm, the Mechanical Engineering Department, and the Wildlife Conservancy, plus fun classroom moments and outdoor activities.
We practically implemented the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) neuron model using analog circuits with tunable excitatory and inhibitory synapses, demonstrating biologically inspired neural dynamics and event-based communication to our learners. An engaging practical session led by our TA Maryada!
Hardware Implementation of Spiking Neurons for Computational Neuroscience! 🧠⚡ Students practically observe real-time neuronal firing behaviour and how adjusting parameters shapes neural dynamics. Thanks to @opensourceneuro.com for customizing the practical learning tools suitable for our course.
An exciting start for our students and TAs!✨ The best learning begins with connection. When students and teaching assistants share joyful moments, they create a welcoming learning environment where ideas flow freely, and everyone feels inspired to learn and collaborate. #CompNeuro #TReNDCaMinA
Today, we officially kicked off the 2026 #TReNDCaMinA Computational Neuroscience & Machine Learning Summer School at DeKUT, Kenya 🚀 We welcome a diverse cohort from across Africa to join our TAs, researchers, and scientists for hands-on mentorship. Enjoy the learning, students! 😍
CaMinA 2026 | The countdown is on! 🚀 Less than a month to go, Dedan Kimathi University will host our new student cohort, dedicated Teaching Assistants, and Faculty for an exciting learning experience in Computational Neuroscience! 🧠✨ We can't wait to meet you all,😍 Photo credit: TReNDCaMinA
