#haikaveh a continuation of sorts from the last time travel snippet… i wonder what little alhaitham could possibly be misunderstanding!! hm

“You only refer to us as friends when you want something.”
“We aren’t— That is to say I wouldn’t call us friends anymore,” Kaveh said sheepishly, breaking the truth. Alhaitham had made that fact more than clear last night. He studied the Alhaitham before him, who was oh-so-unaware of the many fights and sleepless nights to come. The last thing Kaveh wanted to do was hurt him like he’d done in the past.
“We’re not friends?” said Alhaitham, eyes blown wide. His lips parted as if he didn’t expect Kaveh’s answer—which was fair, considering that Kaveh would be surprised too if he was his age. “Oh.”
However, contrary to Kaveh’s expectations, Alhaitham appeared… pleased. No, that couldn’t be right, Kaveh decided. His ability to read Alhaitham dwindled over the years. After all, Alhaitham never looked pleased around him nowadays.

“Would it kill you to be thoughtful for once?” Kaveh pleaded as Alhaitham walked him to his room. “You know—” His voice caught in his throat. “You know how it’s been for me. Please. We were friends once. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”
They stopped under the doorway of Kaveh’s bedroom. Kaveh had one hand on the doorframe for support now that Alhaitham’s hands were off him. Through unfocused eyes, he looked at Alhaitham, begging for a crumb of leniency, of kindness, with his gaze.
“Friends,” Alhaitham echoed. His mouth curled around the word as if tasting it with bitter displeasure. “Funny. You only refer to us as friends when you want something.”

“Not sure,” Alhaitham had said like a liar. Crumbs of curiosity piled in his mind the more Mehrak spoke about her Baba. But then again, kids tended to have warped perceptions of their parents anyway.

He thought of him often. How could he not when he was everywhere? The annotations left in dated research journals. The empty space sitting next to him at a bench built for two. The mirror when he stared at it for too long. He was inescapable, no matter how many years of distance accumulated between them.

But rarely was Kaveh honest with himself. I don’t miss him, he’d think while walking through the markets. It’s better this way, he’d tell himself when he’d hear his name in passing. I’ve moved on, he’d reassure his mirrored reflection when flashes of their fight invaded his mind.

Once his sober mind fell to intoxication, the lies crumbled. Truth was a greedy, attention-seeking little thing—he could only ignore it for so long before it came knocking on his door, demanding acknowledgment.

“Oh, please. You’re not fooling anybody, least of all, me,” said Dehya, teasing and cocksure. “Just last month, you confessed to using his shampoo while he’s away on work trips because—your words, not mine—it makes your pillow smell like him.”
Alhaitham swallowed with an appropriate amount of shame. “I am not responsible for what I say while inebriated.”

The archons must hear his pleas because Alhaitham stirs a moment later. He shifts around, winces, then blinks slowly until his eyes become accustomed to the dim environment. When his eyes land on him, his mouth parts, and “Kaveh?” comes out. “Kaveh,” he repeats, as if experimenting with how the word sounds from his lips.

Kaveh. Is that his name? Kaveh, he mouths. The syllables are foreign on his lips, but the name resonates with him regardless. Kaveh. Yes, that must be his name.

“Alhaitham,” he responds, unable to think of another thing to say. He watches Alhaitham undergo the same mental processing, mouthing his own name and all, as him.

it seems like things are getting fruit-y up in here 👀🍊 #haikaveh

“Watch. You can’t slice the peach toward the cutting board because you’ll be left with uneven shapes,” Kaveh explains. He positions the knife’s sharp edge toward the peach’s core. “You have to cut toward the center,” he says, slicing into the peach, “and then, you’ll get even pieces.” He takes the piece he cut off and pops it into his mouth. Refreshing sweetness bursts in his mouth. It’s good.
“I’ve got it,” Alhaitham says with the slightest scrunch of his nose, betraying faint displeasure. Kaveh hands the fruit and knife back to him. Alhaitham mimics what Kaveh did and produces a uniform peach slice to the one Kaveh ate.
He offers it to Kaveh.
Kaveh looks at the peach slice then looks at him. Alhaitham is decidedly looking off to the side. He’s curious about what’s so interesting over there.
Instead of taking the fruit and putting it inside his mouth, like any normal person would do, he bites it off Alhaitham’s hand. Instant regret sours the peach’s erupting sweet flavor. Think before you act, Kaveh scolds himself. In his defense, the peach slice was next to his mouth, just centimeters away. However, no defense stops Kaveh from thinking, Why did I do that?
Now, Alhaitham is looking at him. Kaveh belatedly notices how close they’re standing. How close their faces are. Kaveh jumps away inelegantly. Distance is good. Distance is safe.

🔞 someone’s dreaming 👀 #haikaveh

Suddenly, Alhaitham’s vision whites out and lava-hot warmth leaks into every crevice of his body. He’s burning. He thinks he must have a fever. He hopes Kaveh won’t blame himself for Alhaitham’s spontaneous sickness.
The heat doesn’t cool—it rises. However, Alhaitham finds himself basking in its burn. He feels like he’s being hugged on all sides. It’s comforting, somehow. The tension in his heart drains away, replaced with pleasure curling in his gut.
Kaveh keeps saying his name. “Haitham,” he says reverently, eyes half-lidded. “Haitham,” he says again, lips trembling in hunger. “Haitham,” he cries out, voice raw and raspy.
“Haitham,” he repeats, the sound growing farther away.
“Haitham.”
“Haitham.”
Alhaitham opens his eyes violently. An uninteresting ceiling stares back. No blinding light, no golden halo. Kaveh is gone.

I doubt anyone’s as obsessed w time traveling #haikaveh as me

The last time Alhaitham stood in front of him, Kaveh ripped their thesis, and by that, the fabric of their friendship, apart. The last time Alhaitham stood in front of him, Kaveh told him that he regretted befriending him.
He’s replayed that conversation over and over, every day since their fight.
Alhaitham is the first to talk. “The research center,” he says, as if that explains anything.
Unfortunately, it does. Kaveh is part-relieved part-bitter that he still understands Alhaitham’s cryptic way of speaking. The idea of forgetting something that once came second-hand, almost instinctual, scares him. Yet, Kaveh is tired of trying to make out what Alhaitham shrouds in layer after layer of pretentiousness. He’s tired of being the one understanding, not the one understood.

Absorbed by his fantasy, Kaveh stops sweeping. Unfortunately, Alhaitham’s attention parts from his book at that moment, and he looks up at a dazed Kaveh.
“I didn’t tell you to stop sweeping,” he says flippantly.
Kaveh’s reverie breaks. He frowns at Alhaitham, who sits much farther from him in reality. He already mourns the phantom touches. “Why should I listen to you?” he responds, accustomed to Alhaitham’s snide remarks.
“Who owns the house?” Alhaitham challenges in a cocksure tone.
“This place would be a pigsty without me, and you know it,” Kaveh fires back. The coffee table piled with books is evidence enough.
“And I am sufficiently grateful for your service,” Alhaitham says, monotone.
Heat rises to Kaveh’s face. Alhaitham is teasing him, and he knows that, which is why his face is heating up in frustration and nothing more. He grabs the handle of the broom and pokes Alhaitham’s (very firm) bicep. “Don’t be sarcastic. It’s not a good habit,” he says.
