2 Florida Republicans endorse Mills opponent in primary
TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Two Florida Republican House members — Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos — shook up the state’s 7th District GOP primary Wednesday by endorsing Ryan Elijah over the embattled and Trump-endorsed incumbent, Rep. Cory Mills . The move is the latest sign of the GOP turning up the heat on Mills, who has struggled to raise money amid an ongoing House ethics investigation. A judge issued a restraining order last year after Mills was accused by a former girlfriend of threatening to circulate sexually explicit videos of her. Mills has denied any wrongdoing. By supporting Elijah, a former FOX 35 Orlando anchor, the lawmakers are attempting to rally behind one of the four Republicans in the running, with Democrats seeking a possible flip. “We need leaders in Congress who serve with integrity, energy, and an unwavering commitment to the people who sent them there. Ryan Elijah is that leader,” Luna and Haridopolos said on social media . But aside from backing Elijah, Luna went further to say Mills should drop out of the race. “He needs to not be seeking reelection,” Luna said in a text message to POLITICO. Elijah faces an Aug. 18 primary headlined by Mills, whom President Donald Trump endorsed as a “Successful Entrepreneur, and Brave U.S. Army Combat Veteran and Bronze Star recipient.” The race also features Michael Don Johnson, an Army veteran and former Army intelligence specialist who sued in a failed attempt to kick Mills off the ballot, and businesswoman Sarah Ulrich. Elijah maintains that attacking Mills has not been a focus of his campaign, as he instead tells voters the allegations against his opponent are serious and that the House Ethics panel should continue its probe. "I’m honored to have the endorsements of two Florida Representatives I deeply respect,” Elijah said in a statement to POLITICO. “They understand what’s at stake in our congressional race and know I’m the clear choice to win in November." Mills did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the endorsement. Kimbery Leonard and Meredith Lee Hill contributed to this report.

Trump targets El-Sayed, suggests voter irregularities after Michigan primary
President Donald Trump panned Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in a social media post, calling the progressive Democrat a “Communist, who is not liked in Detroit,” while alleging without evidence rampant voter fraud in the state. “Wayne County (Detroit) in Michigan is one of the most corrupt voting areas in the United States, if not the World,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday . “It is strictly Third World! Miracles happen in Wayne County, including more votes being cast than there are voters, by a lot.” El-Sayed advanced to become the Democratic Party’s nominee to face Republican Mike Rogers in the November election on Wednesday, after a weaker-than-expected showing against Rep. Haley Stevens in Tuesday’s primary. Stevens conceded to El-Sayed on Wednesday morning. But far from the romp progressives were expecting — polls showed El-Sayed leading by double digits in the weeks before election day — he squeaked past the four-term House lawmaker by just thousands of votes. El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s post. On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced that it was sending poll watchers to monitor voting sites in Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing — four heavily Democratic areas — “to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.” “The Department of Justice is devoting extensive resources to ensure uniform and nondiscriminatory monitoring,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement Tuesday. “We appreciate the cooperation of these jurisdictions in promoting trust and transparency.” But Trump still said Republicans would have to overcome fraud to get Rogers over the line in November. “The Radical Left Socialist has a real shot, and don’t discount all of those fake mail-in ballots that will 'surprisingly' show up at the last moment,” he said. “Get ready for another Rigged Election.”

Trump-backed candidate in battleground Michigan district loses to opponent who dropped out
President Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate lost a top battleground Republican primary in Michigan — to a candidate who suspended his campaign last month. Amir Hassan, a Navy veteran and former law enforcement officer from Flint backed by Trump, finished significantly behind Tom Smith on Wednesday. Hassan rallied with Trump in Milford, Michigan, just last week. Smith, a retired engineer, had dropped out in mid-July and endorsed another candidate who ended up in third in the primary. Smith told POLITICO that he would now return to challenge first-term Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet for the purple 8th District. “I look forward to working with Speaker [Mike] Johnson and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again,” Smith said in a statement. McDonald Rivet is among the more than a dozen Democratic incumbents seeking reelection in a district Trump won in 2024. But a GOP strategist, granted anonymity to speak candidly, characterized her as a “powerhouse.” The strategist added that Hassan had “clear flaws as a candidate” and the “GOP base was reluctant to support a dude named Amir Hassan.” A handful of Trump-endorsed candidates have lost state-level races this year — including the governor’s races in Iowa and Georgia — but Hassan is the first congressional candidate to lose despite the president’s support this cycle.

Thanedar becomes latest incumbent to fall to a progressive challenger
Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar lost his primary to democratic socialist Donavan McKinney on Wednesday — the latest victory for progressives who’ve been on a hot streak of ousting incumbents in safe-blue districts. Thanedar’s 13th District was a top priority for groups like Justice Democrats that are committed to primarying incumbent members that they believe aren’t in line with the areas they represent. Justice Democrats helped recruit McKinney into the race and spent nearly $1 million on his behalf, making his campaign one of its biggest targets this cycle. McKinney, a state representative, had secured the backing of a number of progressive House Democrats, including some members of the Congressional Black Caucus who bucked party leadership, which was standing behind Thanedar in the heavily Black Detroit-based district. Some of Thanedar’s colleagues were also frustrated by his efforts to force a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump last year, an effort he ultimately backed away from . The district is a safe seat for Democrats, and McKinney is expected to win easily in November.
