T. Rutherford

@trutherford.bsky.social

Academic by day, fiction writer by night (and on the weekends, and lunch, and in any spare moment). She/Her

Finished novel number five! Like the others, I stuck to a consistent writing schedule of at least 800 words a day with no days off. I'm ready for the break that it is editing and spending more time on my beta partners' work too!

A graph of words per day, adding around 800 per day, every day, up to 84K or so

I've very much enjoyed our #CRPSirens #CampRevPit experience, due in large part to the leadership from @nadineflintbooks.bsky.social! I kept up w/800 words/day goal in WIP and didn't let querying other books get me down. So glad to have made some new connections and learn about all your cool books!

#CRPSirens, it's our last day together. Thank you for spending the last 12 days together! Your stories & enthusiasm are truly inspiring and I'm so excited to find your books on shelves one day. Share your celebrations below.🧜‍♀️ 🧜‍♂️ Keep an eye out for a fun last day mixer with all of #CampRevPit

In the background, a rocky, most-covered beach. The text reads: Closing Circle. Day 12: May 1. What is something you're proud of from camp? An achievement? Word count goal? Critique swap? New Connections made?

Let's celebrate!

My emoji pitch for my #CampRevPit novel: 🤽‍♂️➡️(🏊‍♂️🧜‍♂️) + (🏊‍♀️🧜‍♀️🩺)=💞🏆- 🩺+🎯🔮 haha, make sense of that #CRPSirens 😉

#CRPSirens it's our second last day together! Using your Id list from yesterday for inspo, pitch your project using emojis. Not comfortable with your own MS? Try pitching a published book. Need help? Let us know and we can do it together👇️ I'll add mine in comments #CampRevPit

In the background, a river valley surrounded by evergreen trees. The text reads: Pitch Practice: These aren't just for contests, they're for your readers. Day 11: April 30. Pitching isn't just for snagging an agent, it's a language used to signal to your readers that your book is for them. Using emojis, practice your pitch below. Refer to your Id list from yesterday for inspo. Need help? Let us know and our cabin mates can help! It's our second last day together, Sirens, let's hype each other up.

Realizing I don't have a ton on my Id List. I love lots of tropes, depending on execution, but don't have consistent favorites. Two things I do especially like: Settings, jobs, and hobbies that read as *authentic* Genuinely nice people #CampRevPit #CRPSirens

Nadine Flint@nadineflintbooks.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#CRPSirens let's talk about the juicy stuff. Jennifer Lynn Barnes spoke about creating an Id list in 2022. I've adopted the practice & have a running list of things I love in books (see below) I often refer to this list when starting a new project. What's on your list? Let me know! #CampRevPit

In the background, an evergreen forest covered in mist. The text reads: Id Lists: Consciously curating what you love in stories and injecting these elements into your writing. Day 10: April 29. Create a list of elements you find irresistible in books (tropes, characters, settings, plots, etc). Did any of these make it into your current MS?

Great #CampRevPit question. Things keeping my leads apart: 🩺MC1 doesn't want a relationship until she is through med school 🔮MC2 can't think into the future without having a panic attack ⚡They are both terrible at reading signals 🤽‍♂️vs 🏊‍♂️After they get together, MC2 might betray the team #CRPSirens

Nadine Flint@nadineflintbooks.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#CRPSirens I need your tips on creating tension! Emily Varga shared on On The Write Track Podcast that if your one MC is a firefighter, the other better be an arsonist. Now I’m always asking: How can I create opposition? What do they have to overcome? How do you approach tension? LMK👇

MC from my #CampRevPit novel would have a ponytail holder, a nose clip, and probably a hand-written reminder about an OChem test. The LI would likely have something silly his sister slipped in his pocket and a flyer for an interesting history or psychology documentary on campus. #CRPSirens

Nadine Flint@nadineflintbooks.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#CRPSirens let’s yap about our characters! Of course knowing their physical appearance is part of getting to know our characters, but often those quieter questions really get us thinking. What’s in your character’s pocket? Let me know below 👇 Make sure to comment on your fellow campers’ posts🧜‍♀️

In the background, an image of a snow capped mountain with blue sky. The text reads: tap session: getting to know your character. Day 8: April 27. What’s in your main character’s pocket? Find two workers and comment on their posts.

I already shared my first sight snippet from my #CampRevPit novel, but here's one from the LI's POV for their first actual meeting, when the water-polo player LI has to join the synchronized swimming team to keep his scholarship. #CRPSirens

There were a few sympathetic murmurs among the swimmers, but also a few scoffs. A woman next to the first removed her goggles and squinted up at him. “Isn’t that a little unfair? They won’t make us varsity, so we don’t get scholarships, but we have to have a new swimmer who gets a scholarship?”
Recognition hit him like a brick when he took in the glare of her denim blue eyes. This was the woman from Mr. Lehrer’s office. He stammered his answer. “Yeah, that does sound unfair, sorry.”
If she recognized him, it didn’t show. She pressed her lips together and took him in, clearly unimpressed. He’d have his work cut out for him to make this group accept him as any kind of teammate. He wasn’t even sure if he could do . . . whatever it was they did, but at this point, he had no choice but to try.
Nadine Flint@nadineflintbooks.bsky.social · 3mo ago

Alright #CRPSirens we’ve spent 7 days together. Let’s gather around the campfire get into those juicy details! How did your characters meet? I would LOVE to see your snippets, too 👀 #CampRevPit

In the background, an image of a lake surrounded by mountains and evergreen trees. The text reads: Camp Confessions: Meet Cute Day 7: April 26. How did your characters meet? Share a snippet if you’re up for it! Find two writers and comment on their posts.

Love this question! My #CampRevPit novel MC isn't reflective enough about her own needs and desires--instead, she's just following what she thinks her grandfather wanted her to do (be a doctor). But she hates blood, and instead, loves to build things and solve puzzles. #CRPSirens

Happy Saturday, #CampRevPit! 🏕️ Who doesn't love a beautifully imperfect character? Tell us more about your #CharacterFlaw. What is your MC’s biggest flaw, and how does it derail them?

On a grassy green hill beneath a starry night sky, the firefly clings to a branch and dangles a tied stack of story notes from a stick with the label “Darlings” written on the top page. The caterpillar reaches for the tied bundle of notes with mouth wide open, ready to chow down. Behind the tree, which still has bite marks from the caterpillar’s previous meal, the mantis holds her claws to her face in dismay. Dawn is beginning to tint the horizon red. The image has the text: Day 6: #CharacterFlaw

My #CAMPRevPit #CRPSirens novel is GETTING IN SYNCH and it is made up of: ❤️‍🔥Slow burn 🤽‍♂️🏊‍♂️A fish out of water (in water) 🎓College campus setting ⛈️Tragic past 🎯Misplaced ambition 🙋‍♀️Meddling best friend 🤝Teamwork 🍨Healthy dose of ice cream for all important talks

#CRPSirens we’re on canteen duty! What elements are present in your story? Tropes? Snacks? POVs? Just like those candy bags and printed t-shirts in the canteen evoke certain camp memories, what are those ingredients in your story? #CampRevPit

In the background, evergreen trees are covered in fog. The text reads: Canteen Duty: Story Recipes. Day 6: April 25. Every book has its secret recipe. What ingredients did you choose for yours? Are there tropes, social story elements? A way of story telling? Find two other writers and comment on their story ingredients!

Here's my bingo card and snippet: The first MC/LI interaction (kind of setting up "forced proximity" and "troubled but cute") from my cozy college sports romance GETTING IN SYNCH Excited to read more from our #CRPSirens and #CRPBeemine #CampRevPit mixer

Bingo card with x's on: forced proximity, slow burn, title is a pun, troubled but cute, friends to lovers, partners in crimeLeaving the door open as he entered, Coach Ramos called back toward the waiting room, his voice the sweet, sad beckon for a lost puppy. “Young, get in here.”
Maggie paused near reception as a tall boy unfolded his legs from where he sat on the floor in what looked like a meditative yoga pose. Despite what she assumed was his name—Young—she really shouldn’t have called him a boy, even if only in her mind. He towered over her as he passed, his shoulders broad enough he’d have to angle his body to fit through Lehrer’s office door.
She stopped herself from turning back to see, the sudden swoop in her stomach reminding her of the occasional teenage crushes she’d experienced back home. He looked so much like the surfers she used to watch while perched on the fence at La Jolla. All sandy hair flopping across his darker brows. Selectively painted by the sun in a way that seemed designed to make her insides tumble.

A bingo sheet. The text reads: BeeMjne & Sirens Cabin Mixer Bingo: forced proximity, slow burn, found family, sunshine and grumpy, second chance romance, dysfunctional family, title is a pun, troubled but cute, secret relationship, insta love, historical not set in the UK, friends to lovers, partners in crime, one bed, enemies to lovers, fake dating

Hi #CRPSirens! I've only been writing 16 months and those that know me know I am pretty rigid in my writing habits (min 800 words/day if I'm not editing--see chart). I rely heavily on discord sprints, iced herbal tea, and dark chocolate almonds. No music (except when editing).

A chart of words per day for a little over a year, showing about 800 words per day for four books, with small breaks between.

Rise & Shine #CRPSirens ☀️ My relationship with writing has changed over the years, & each project has required different things from me. Sometimes it was sneaking in a sentence on my phone during a sliver of nap time or scribbling in a journal in the dark hours once the littles went to bed. Cont⬇️

In the background, shelves of books stand in rows in a bookstore with a darkened filter on top to darken the image. The text overtop the image reads: The Rise & Shine Chronicles: setting yourself up for success. Day 2: April 21. Do you have any writing rituals or rhythms? How do you approach your writing time? Do you have any wonders or wishes about writing routines? Let us know below and we can talk about it together.

Hi #CRPSirens! This is my 2nd CRP. I write about women with multiple (often conflicting) identities, speculative & non. My WIP is a college sports romance. It's a cozier version of The Cutting Edge, but in synchronized swimming. For CRP, I hope to read some cool work and give & get support. ❤️

Good morning #CRPSirens 🧜🧜‍♀️🧜‍♂️ I’m Nadine & I write romantic fantasy books. My book, MYTH, MUSE, MAGICIAN just hit the query trenches & I’m working on my next project which includes a second chance romance, women in STEM, only-one-textbook, and a MMC with a devastatingly-sharp jawline 😏 (Cont. 🧵)

In the background, a photo of the inside of Barter Books in Alnwick, with stoned walls and shelves of books. Over top, text that reads: “we’re live, we’re live, we’re live! And embracing our author era. Day 1: April 20. 1. Introduce yourself. 2z Tell us a bit about what you’re working on. 3. Set an intention for our time together. What do you want to get out of Camp RevPit?

So proud of and excited for my writing buddy @fantasyscience.bsky.social, who was chosen as a #RevPit winner and will be working with Laura. Her novel, ChemPortal, is a nerdy, fun, romantic time, and I can't wait to see it shine even more than it already does!

Congratulations to my pick this year, Fay Irwin’s @fantasyscience.bsky.social Adult Sci-Fi Rom-Com CHEMPORTAL, and my equally loved runner-up, Tiff Bartel’s @tiffbartel.com Adult Sci-Fi SNAGGLETEETH! #RevPit

Thanks again to all in my CP shout-out post, #RevPit editors, and the 2025 RevPit Discord, who've made writing fun and productive and who've helped protect my spirit while doing it. Special second mention to @fantasyscience.bsky.social for being support, CP, and chemistry advisor! #RevPitWaiting

My writing goals post #RevPit are to finish my cozy sports romance by June, then edit, beta, and query. Trying to determine now what I will write afterward. Have three options, but none are rising to the top atm. #RevPitWaiting

Regardless of what happens on Monday, what are your next writing goals? Do any of us have similar paths?

Started out complete Plotter for books 1-3, then book 4, started doing detailed character backstory first, which supported a bit more Plantsing. Continued that w/book 5. I'd now put myself at 5.5 if 1=Pantser and 10=Plotter, but long-time CP and hard-core Pantser says I'm a 7. #RevPitWaiting

One of my beta readers, the amazing and multi-talented @erinabecca.bsky.social, made these super cool portraits of my characters from my #RevPit novel, Anti-Charter Campaign. Check out Britt, Catherine, Susanne, and Angelo ❤️ It was so much fun to see them through her eyes! #RevPitWaiting
