I'm late to this, but the current reality is a sad state of affairs. Prioritizing the hot take artists over even-keeled, professional personalities may gain some engagement. But it continues to chip away at credibility. That used to mean something at ESPN.

I’ve played a lot of CFB. I’ve never seen a player have a career ending injury.
I understand the point of this piece. However, there is a wide gap between being the players' bestie and more effectively communicating with them. Engelbert painfully fails at the latter.

I consistently question how many people yearning for the old ESPN would actually watch it in this era? Would you actively choose a traditional SportsCenter, Outside the Lines or The Sports Reporters over First Take or Pat McAfee? I'd welcome that being the case. But I doubt it.
ESPN is laying people off while one of its well-compensated faces has enough spare time to release a musical album based on being "polarizing." Dark times, man.
It sucks that ESPN is choosing to pay a small handful of personalities $50 million a year and cutting costs elsewhere. I’m sure they have data saying those guys move the needle but it feels like a long-term disaster to invest everything in 3-5 guys when you could fund a robust media ecosystem
