No one knows who designed this garden. For 600 years, countless people have interpreted its meaning. The only conclusion is that it has no design.

Photo by PJH. A raked gravel garden holds small islands of moss and stone, their forms arranged with gentle balance. A weathered earthen wall runs behind them, and beyond it stands a mix of pale cherry blossoms and fresh spring greens under a muted sky, creating a scene of calm presence.

One of our Golden Cane Palms is growing a new leaf. It always starts as a long, pointy cane that gains its final height quickly, then splits lengthwise over the course of weeks, revealing an array of pinnate leaflets. This one is almost there! It’s inspiring to see the progress every day.
