BREAKING: Abdul El-Sayed has officially won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan
"The overwhelming case for a land tax has been known for centuries and made by many of the most prominent economists." Legendary British economist Charles Goodhart makes a strong case for LVT in his latest op-ed.
This Ontario minister championed land value capture (LVC) to fund transit. When land values rise because of public investments, the public should get some of that back to fund more transit. We could be doing this everywhere.
What would the world be like if we had common wealth dividends? A world with more personal freedom and opportunity. Freedom to take career risks, entrepreneurial risks, volunteer, care for loved ones.
LVT is about fixing incentives to reward, not punish builders. "If the region's jurisdictions taxed land more so than improvements to it, denser and more walkable neighborhood development would be more lucrative than surface parking, vacant lots, and sparse development."
Canadian Youtuber About Here says growth creates windfalls for homeowners. But instead of letting them pocket all that new wealth (mostly land value), society should capture some of it back. This can fund housing/transit or replace harmful taxes.
Don't forget: basic income has historically had major support among conservatives.
The basic income movement is coming together in Toronto. Meet supporters from Canada and abroad, with remarks from The Honourable Senator @kpateonthehill.bsky.social and BIEN co-founder Dr. Guy Standing. 📅 Wed Aug 19, doors 6 PM 🎟️ Free RSVP: ubiworks.ca/toronto
REALTOR .com admits real estate is a Monopoly business, to which the answer is to tax land, not income. This was the original message of the game's creator. 'The game's original ethos was meant to teach the dangers of monopolies, not encourage them.'
There's no rule that says the economy will always need more workers. In fact, the trend suggests the opposite. The only thing we can be sure of is that a stable society requires stable incomes, especially when the job market increasingly resembles winner-take-all.
ALL I ask is that people who reject Universal Basic Income out of hand because “People need to work” interrogate WHY they believe this instead of assuming it as a starting point.
"The decade’s deepest human-development insight was simple. Money can change more than purchasing power. It can change time, liquidity, bargaining, privacy, mobility, the ability to repair a roof before the rain, and the freedom to make an ordinary purchase without asking permission." #UBI
A new article from BIEN looks back at the decade when UBI moved from theory to real-world pilots. Focusing on the period 2006–2016, the article traces how pilots in Namibia, India, Brazil, Switzerland, and South Korea transformed the policy. zurl.co/qE0cw
It's occurred to me that one of the big benefits of UBI is that it would *remove vast numbers of inept people* from jobs that they only do to survive, and free them to do things they're COMPETENT AT even if they don't pay anything. You don't, e.g., ever want yours truly waiting your table.
Economic Security Project calls for UBI -- an income floor and AI dividends. 'Establish an income floor for displaced workers... "AI dividend" is modeled after the Alaska Permanent Fund, which compensates Alaskan citizens using investment returns on a sovereign wealth fund.'
Marshall Islands Finance Minister says AI is about to make basic income a global necessity.
Canada's land and natural resource rents are enough to pay at least $7,500K/year in dividends per adult or lower income taxes for most working Canadians. This is how we can improve affordability and ensure that our common wealth benefits all current and future generations.
To fix Ontario's housing system, replace anti-productive taxes on income and property with a land value tax.
NYU's Newspaper calls for Land Value Tax to fix housing. "it has the potential to eliminate land speculation and incentivize development. Doing so could help end our housing crisis, lower prices and ensure that New York City is a place where everyone can afford to prosper."
"Society increasingly resembles aristocracy" Government report shows how social mobility dies by 2040: —inheritance the only way to get ahead —owning home not realistic for many —value of labour killed by AI To restore the link between wealth & work, tax land not work.
Guaranteed Basic Income is proving to be a workforce investment, not just a safety net. In Howard County, families used additional income to stay current on rent, reduce debt, pursue education, strengthen employment prospects, and invest in their children's success.
4,000 jobs cut out of 10,000 directly attributed to AI. Stock price soared. UBI is inevitable.
One of the few very visible Canadians shedding light on the hard truth about housing. UBC's Dr. Paul Kershaw, founder of Generation Squeeze "We cannot reward housing speculation with tax breaks without expecting home values to outpace local earnings."
Our current tax system punishes development and rewards extracting rent. It's time for LVT.
Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend model should be taken to Canada—one of the most resource-rich nations in the world. "The dividend belongs to all people equally. The resources belong to all people equally. And the only way to do that is a dividend."
Ontario could eliminate all developer fees with a 0.2% land value tax, which developers might prefer and can promote affordability.
Yet Canada continues to tax wages way more than the #1 source of wealth—rising land values Is anybody really surprised that inequality keeps growing?
