UOITFA at Ontario Tech

@uoitfa.bsky.social

The UOITFA is the association of tenured, tenure-track, teaching and academic associate faculty at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa https://linktr.ee/uoitfa

Why is this happening? Ontario funds its universities less per student than any other province, leaving institutions to fill the gap by relying on precarious contract labour. The result: bigger classes, heavier workloads, and fewer supports for students.

Graphic featuring a quote that reads: “Ontario’s universities are being forced to operate under conditions that no public system should endure. Minor tweaks will not fix a structural problem. And a system built on precarious work cannot deliver the education that Ontario students deserve, and our provincial economy needs to thrive.” — Rob Kristofferson, OCUFA President. The background shows a desk scene with a mason jar holding pencils and a laptop displaying an op-ed entitled “Ontario’s universities are being run on gig work – and students are paying the price.” OCUFA logo and website link appear at the bottom.

Walk into many Ontario university classrooms today and you’ll see a system under strain: overcrowded classes, overstretched instructors, and growing instability. More and more teaching is being done on short-term contracts. This is the gigification of teaching. 🧵 #Fairness4CF

Graphic featuring a quote that reads: “The growing presence of contract faculty on campuses represents the quiet ‘gigification’ of university teaching.” — Rob Kristofferson, OCUFA President. The background shows a desk scene with a yellow coffee cup and a tablet displaying an op-ed entitled “Ontario’s universities are being run on gig work – and students are paying the price.” OCUFA logo and website link appear at the bottom.

Too many contract faculty are hired term-to-term, paid less than their peers for the same teaching, & denied benefits. That instability affects faculty and students. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions. Read the op-ed #Fairness4CF tinyurl.com/cfsmdoa @ocufa.bsky.social

Very proud of @ontariotechu.bsky.social! We are an exciting, vibrant place to be! With that said, I hope OTU gets serious about negotiating a new contract with faculty. Let's avoid the same fate as Laurentian and keep OTU's momentum going in a positive direction! Fully behind @uoitfa.bsky.social!

Future-ready education is in demand. Ontario Tech undergraduate applications are up 5.3%, more than twice the provincial average. 🚀 Read about how we’re gaining momentum across Ontario and beyond.

Ontario Tech's Board of Governors is shutting the community out of important conversations regarding Enrolment and the University’s Differentiated Growth Agenda – plans stemming from this conversation could directly impact our teaching and learning conditions.

My thoughts go out to LU Faculty; I hope they can come to a swift, beneficial resolution. I feel for the students who will be disrupted. A strike is always a last resort, but often there is no other choice. I'm hopeful OTU can avoid the same fate. I'm 100% behind our awesome Faculty Association!
