RCC's co-hosted AI Sandpit on Monday—part of UQ's Research & Innovation Week—was a roaring success.  The interactive showcase explored AI’s quirks & blind spots & how they can lead research astray.  A panel/Q&A covered current UQ initiatives to mitigate risks while accelerating impactful research.

RCC’s Jonathan Hadwen challenged frontier AI models to a game of chess by a specialist chess neural network, LCZero. Jonathan said: “The frontier models usually start suggesting illegal moves within the first 12 moves and are always beaten by the specialist model, despite the fact that LCZero’s network is at least 37,000 times smaller.” (Photo by Sarah Walters.)
