Exhibits are a big part of Archives and Museums, but designing them can be complex. Will you exhibit originals or reproductions? Can your cabinets securely store an item while providing the best possible view? Does your exhibit tell a narrative and is it engaging for your audience to read?
Do you know Front Page Challenge? Running from 1957 to 1995, it was Canada's longest running non-news program and featured panel games about current events and history. These photos from the University Relations fonds show a 1985 episode that was taped on campus in the Duckworth Centre.
The #ACAHashtagParty for this month is #ArchivesProtest! This photo, from the University Relations fonds, shows a student protest at Wesley Hall at the University of Winnipeg. The 1980's saw huge discussions about Education in Manitoba, with many students organizing to prevent funding reductions.

An important part of preserving records is preventing the establishment of pests who eat or otherwise damage records. This includes moths, like this one that was recently caught in the Archives and released. The larvae of clothes moths in particular love to munch on textiles.
If you need help finding a record or writing a history paper, UW Archives staff can provide research assistance. Contact us at archives@uwinnipeg.ca or 204-786-9162 to book an appointment.

A new fonds (24.11) is available! Its the Winnipeg Pride Collection, which brings together material from various organizations and individuals that reflect events and advocacy around 2SLGBTQ+ Pride and inclusion in Winnipeg. This collection is small but expected to grow as new items are added.
The #ACAHashtagParty for this month is #ArchivesPlay! From the University Relations Communications Photograph collection, this 1997 photo shows some of student life on the UW campus. The students seem absorbed by the mind boggling effects of 90's video-game consoles.
This image, from the Joseph Francis Tennant Collection in the WCPI, is a tintype. Unlike a modern photo, its made by adding a positive onto a thin metal sheet which has a dark enamel coating. It was invented by Adolphe Alexandre Martin in 1853 and was at its most popular between 1860's-1870's.
Sometimes an archival item preserves historical information beyond its immediate purpose. For the Vox Weslyana, you can see student writings and campus events as well as advertising trends and pop-culture of yesteryear. This includes some unusual ads by Neilson's Chocolate published in 1937.
A new fonds (00.077) is available! This collection comes form the United College Faculty Association (now the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association), which was a faculty advocacy group promoting the academic, social, and general welfare of its members.
Its the End of Summer Term! Take some time to to enjoy a sunny day away from school work and eye straining computer screens. This photo is of a student working in the computer lab, from the Marketing and Communications fonds.
Check out this photo from Leonard Lapointe, part of the Flin Flon Collection in the WCPI. This is engine #101, which derailed and slid into a lake. I wonder how they rescued the engine?
Have a burning history question? Get in touch with UW Archives! We preserve records on the University of Winnipeg and its communities, as well as the surrounding neighbourhood and special collections that support research like the Two-Spirit Archives.
Check out this document from the Marketing and Communications fonds! This plan was produced by Corbett Cibinet Architects in 2001 for UW reviewing the campus and its buildings. It goes in depth, providing detailed building recommendations, some of are which very different to how the campus grew.
The UW Archives is closed today and Friday (7th) for maintenance work. Come visit us when we reopen on Monday, August 10th.
