Members of the History Faculty are deeply saddened to learn of the news of the death of Professor David Abulafia (1949-2026). David is remembered for his innovative and wide-ranging scholarship on the Mediterranean sea and region in the medieval and early modern periods, and his warm collegiality.

De arabist en jurist Laila alZwaini is overleden. Ze was al geruime tijd ziek en overleed zaterdag op 59jarige leeftijd. Laila alZwaini trad als deskundige geregeld op in de media.ppAlZwaini werd op 6 juli 1965 in Eindhoven geboren als dochter van een Nederlandse moeder en een Iraakse vader. Ze was gespecialiseerd in onder meer de sharia islamitische rechtsleer, Arabische stammen en vrouwenrechten in de islamitische en Arabische wereld.ppZe was onder meer verbonden als onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Leiden, waar ze rechten en islamitische studies studeerde.ph2Vriend van de showh2pAlZwaini woonde en werkte enige tijd in Egypte, Irak en Jemen waar ze wetenschappelijk onderzoek deed. Ook trad ze op als hoofd van een rechtsstaatmissie van de Verenigde Naties in Afghanistan. ppOok bij de NOS was alZwaini vaak te zien en te horen als duider. In het radioprogramma Nieuws en Co NOSNTR was ze onder meer vriend van de show.ppIn het radioprogramma Met het Oog op Morgen vertelde ze meeslepend, onder meer over revolutionaire bewegingen in Syri of Irak. Ik vond haar heel integer, zei hij tegen de NOS.ppVolgens Can belichtte alZwaini ook de positieve kant van de mensen en de regio in het MiddenOosten. Ze had oog voor het menselijk verhaal maar ook voor andere perspectieven. Dat maakte haar heel bijzonder en ook heel geliefd.p
