Would 20 y/o you be impressed or disappointed by you today?

Nobody likes this, but I have a persistent feeling that the people who make "living with LLMs" such a problem are the people who go around saying living with LLMs is a problem.

I consider Eliezer Yudkowsky a direct intellectual descendant of Rene Descartes.

Kind of interesting that the labs still seem to believe that if they release a sufficiently powerful model, then everything really will change all at once.

I know free will is real because I keep choosing to poast on this god damn website.

In most contexts, seeing the words "dualism" and "free will" is intriguing. I'd like to read on. But when I see them on here it's tied up with the worst posters on this site.

I don't really see a sense in which LLMs are independent entities such that we need to discuss their outputs as "aligned" or "misaligned."

They're making a movie about my life called Duty to Poast.

I think the points here about the upshot of LLMs being greater worker insecurity as opposed to the Big Doomer fears like mass unemployment could be accurate. I would just add that, like virtually everything else we fixate on, LLMs enter only after the trend was well underway.

but all that's happening here is the same thing that always happens: a group of people had the thought that their cause is righteous and moral and they're incrementally justifying worse and worse behavior and entirely incapable of reflecting on how they might be the problem 2/2

the general public has been getting constant waves of fear and confusion from ai companies i thought the whole "you will be replaced" thing was as bad as it gets but now it's "you will literally die" the defense is always "it would be irresponsible of me not to warn people of the risks" 1/2

The "tell" for me personally is that I have a set of genuinely-useful uses, but I'll often find that I simply forget to use them while I'm in the flow, and...nothing's really different. A couple things like proofreading are not manually replicable (reasonably speaking). Unlike most things IME.

I will say that, while I expect this to change over a long period of time, I could personally still get by fine without an LLM at work and nobody would be wise to it. I have Gemini and ChatGPT access through work - and the higher ups have encouraged their use - but it's basically same old same old.

Right now, I think people on the left/left of center have two competing intuitions: the economy is "bad" because of Trump's policies / the economy is "fine" because AI isn't impacting it.

People really want Trump to be an economic disaster and sorry, it's just not playing out that way. There's no doubt his policies have reduced growth relative to an alternative baseline, but the US economy is in great shape for the near to medium term, even more so given everything he's thrown at it.
