The first Ebola case has been reported today in France. Our rapid risk assessment last month showed that France consistently ranked among the European countries at highest risk of importation if an Ebola case were to arrive in Europe from the ongoing Bundibugyo outbreak.
Our recent analyses on the international dissemination risk associated with the current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC are discussed in @lemonde.fr today: www.lemonde.fr/planete/arti... #SUMOC @inserm.fr @fac-sante-sorbonne.bsky.social

On May 22 WHO reported 1 more #hantavirus case linked to the MV Hondius, while some high-risk contacts are still being located. We estimated that heterogeneous isolation + uncertainty on pre-sympt transmission leave a non-negligible risk of secondary clusters. Work led by @eugeValdano.

What we choose to implement - and when - matters. Our work shows that proactive screening strategies can reduce transmission by ~40% vs reactive responses. A key lesson for preparedness. In PNAS Nexus: ow.ly/cLnu50YCrcn

A study of 25 primary schools in France found that weekly screening of all students during the Delta and Omicron waves of the COVID-19 pandemic reduced school transmission by around 40% compared to reactive strategies used at other schools. In PNAS Nexus: https://ow.ly/jhii50YCrcm
Great discussion with @billhanage.bsky.social and the audience at #ESCMIDGlobal2026 during our session “Pathogens and people: modelling epidemics for preparedness”. Strong focus on how to improve preparedness in collaboration with public health institutes - lots to take forward.
