Jangle-Pop Brilliance: Real Numbers Shine Again On New “Was It Always This Way” Album
More than five years have passed since the Real Numbers dropped their iconic “Brighter Then” EP—still, in my book, the greatest jangle-pop EP release of all time. Yes, I’ll stand by tha…

Real Numbers have been riding the line between bittersweet & bucolic for years now & “Never Never Again” locks right into the beautiful blush of melancholy that’s made them mainstays here. Bright strums & soft sighs push the song further into the fold of classic Sarah & Creation sound bit.ly/4dO7Jxr
Hello 👋 Extremely big announcement next week! 🌌 Stay tuned ⏰️ we can't wait to share this w/ you!
The Sweets "Gone" 1967 (Sidewalk) Haunting Dylan pastiche that really delivers. The Sweets are Janice & Phil Sweet, parents of Mike & Rob from Stryper🛐🐝 youtu.be/9yq_6t5p_ZE #smokeyrodgers cover. (B-side original also great) @vinyl.bsky.social #nowplaying
There is no greater bastion of 21st-century counterculture than #WFMU. Its fast-moving fundraiser is on now 'til March 15, and hearing some of the adrenaline-fueled DJ tag-teams is like getting a jolt of electricity. If you, me, & every listener don't support it, it could easily become just a memory
I'm playing records @ Small Hours (NE Minneapolis) Wed Feb 4th 7 - 10pm

I 1st heard this one on @wfmu.bsky.social @davethespazz.bsky.social in the year 2000. So yes, it has in fact taken me 25 years to find a copy. In the vast realm of frantic doowop it rarely gets more frantic than this folks. youtu.be/61T_Vsz3f2g?... @vinyl.bsky.social

The Hergs "Style of Love", 1967 Parlophone (Australia) Adelaide group's only release. Sounds like Masters Apprentices but with the punk energy of the Subway Sect with manic European Son rhythm guitar ..and Los Cripis intro?🫠 youtu.be/rMbQOftqu8E?...
The Cones tape is available for purchase for the 1st time! It came out in 2017 but was never distributed. Strange acoustic music a la Beyond the Implode or Tronics. Pick 1 up: www.discogs.com/release/1566...
1973 powerpop banger from the absolutely mysterious group/person Cleo. Label is from California but no other info to be had. ty Martin 4 the tip youtu.be/232wMOaEs08?...

The Surfaris "Bombora" 1963 This is not the Wipe Out Surfaris. Wipe Out broke around the time this came out, lawsuits ensued, probably tanking Bombora, & forcing them to add the "Original" prefix to their name even though they already had many singles out. Scorching 45🔥🤯 youtu.be/mtPwNvjjNmQ?...
Neil Young - Don't Cry No Tears Zuma banger, only released as a single in the UK for some reason. A clear influence on the Dictators' "Stay with Me" riff but also possibly Beat Happening's "Cry For a Shadow"? youtu.be/h_uyq8oGDvU youtu.be/6BprOcQzKSE youtu.be/nJyLMGW4RYA
Big announcement for tiny performance ✨️🤏 Acoustic full band Real Numbers set as part of legendary "Tiny Tuesdays" series - starts early, ends early, low volume, high energy 3/18✨️7:30pm✨️Eagles 34
This Thursday March 6th you will find me DJ'ing The Wiggle Room (Milwaukee). All vinyl / 7-11pm / FREE!
The Shag "Stop and Listen" 1967, Milwaukee I met founding member John once at Beans & Barley although he had left the band before this single was made. B-side is a mildly entertaining Middle -Earth-core instrumental which I believe suffers from terrible pressing defect causing static throughout🧙♂️🤷♀️
Utterly gorgeous sounding UK promo of Ronnie Spector's "Try Some Buy Some" written by George Harrison (1971)🍎
I may have sold my Girl on a Motorcycle soundtrack to a kid at the CC Club on the day Alain Delon died but I still have this. rip Marianne
The Honeycombs – The Honeycombs, 1964 A UK pressing to replace my long held US copy which is quite muddy compared to this. The US also appears to have reverb added to the mix, collectively marginalizing the phenomenal Meek production & raucous performance. Essential upgrade.
XTC's Life Begins at the Hop - I avoided the UK pressing of this one because it came in a PVC sleeve & went with the Australian. The only other countries that pressed this single were Japan, New Zealand & Canada. In the US it was tacked onto Drums & Wires. (Festival company sleeve is correct 🤓
Had to pick this up recently bc I realized I have never owned it, or heard it, on vinyl. I had mistakenly remembered I had it on an LP but it was a single only. Despite this copy being quite thrashed it does in fact sound amazing
