So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

Love this post from a longtime member of @sshmedicine.bsky.social. I might be biased as chair, but I have been a part of SSHM since the late 90s. Scholarly societies like SSHM are important spaces for community building and support, perhaps even more so when HE and humanities seem to be collapsing.

Really sad to miss #SSHM2026, but waving from here at my brilliant medical history colleagues. The Roy Porter Prize announcement reminds me that my first ever publication was a failed entry to that prize, and as a PGR I really appreciated support from the society to turn it into an article (1/2).

I did my MA/PhD at Exeter Uni & was recently an External Examiner for History. As in so many other hums depts under attack, the staff are bloody amazing, work their arses off, & don't deserve this attack (aside, if I hear the word "rightsizing" again, I cannot be held responsible for my actions).

BBC report talks of “inappropriate” & “shameful” NHS “corridor care”. As if NHS Staff choose this. No mention of cause: Insufficient beds because successive govts have cut them. Beds occupied by patients who can’t be discharged because of no community services. What’s shameful: BBC reporting.
