Mrs Vinylsol: "What are you reading?" Me: "Raymond Chandler, 'The Big Sleep'" Mrs V: "Is that the one where Lauren Bacall says..." Me: (Interrupting): "No, that's "To Have And Have Not" When you've been married 40 years you can read each other's minds.

After my first date with my future wife we went back to my flat. I went into the kitchen, leaving Penny sitting on the sofa and when I came back my dog, Elsie, was sitting on her lap with her head on Penny's shoulder. That was 40 years ago. Trust your animal's judgement ....they know.

When I was 15, in 1971, my history teacher, Kevin Ryan, asked me how I expected to pass school certificate if I never did my homework. I told him I didn't need to as I was going to be a rock star. He said "No you're not, you'll be knifed in an alley before you're 20". We were both wrong.

I'd love to see Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley on "Antiques Roadshow". Moderate UK expert "Well, Mr Murphy, this dates back to..," Eddie: "Never mind my man, what's the mutha worth?" Expert: "About £15,000" Eddie (grinning): "GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!"@

I spend much of my time pondering the great, important, unanswered questions of life - such as: who would win a street fight between the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra?

May 8th 1945. My father's diary, Wellington, NZ. "Back to work. Its (illegible). THE WAR IN EUROPE IS OVER. Whole town goes nuts all night. Chris W wanted me to go out with her again tonight but I went with Nancy instead. Went to the St James and saw Laurel and Hardy in "Nothing But Trouble".

If writing "The Real Thing" had been the only thing Johnny Young had ever done in his long career that would be enough to make him an absolute Aussie legend. (It wasn't of course). RIP, Johnny.

I don't really like bands getting the crowd to sing along, singers holding the mic out to the crowd. I suppose it engenders a feeling of community involvement but I pay my money to hear the band, not the bloke standing next to me.

On stage at the Nashville, West Kensington, 1977, with Ziro Baby. That was a great venue to play and I also saw a lot of terrific bands there - the Zones, Madness, The Mekons, Skids, many others. Good times

In the 1960s in New Zealand we got no World Cup coverage at all and when Goal! was shown, one night only, in Wellington High's school hall, supporters came along with banners and rattles and cheered their team's goals as if it was live. It was a fantastic night out.

In the 1960s, Decca had their beautifully recorded Phase 4 Stereo range and EMI countered with their Columbia-released Studio 2 Stereo series. This is a UK 14 track sampler for the range. Total Sound! Yeah!

The inner sleeves of sixties LPs are often more interesting than the outers. This is from HMV, Wellington, mid-sixties. Lovely TVs, fabulous radios and record players - not to mention the white goods. Quality products for a lifetime of satisfaction (or so it says here)

I'm surprised at the congratulations being offered to the All Whites for their disastrous World Cup campaign. We will never progress unless we are intensely critical of performances that net just one point, with 10 goals conceded for only four scored, no matter who we play.

Sometimes album titles are changed for different territories - for example, Split Enz's "Waiata" was renamed "Corroboree" in Australia..I've always felt that, in Ireland, this Iggy Pop classic should have been called "The feckin' eejit".

Fabulous sixties popsike from the legendary Hi-Revving Tongues; contains their classic 'Tropic Of Capricorn', the phase-drenched masterpiece 'Elevator' and much more. The shirts may not have aged well but the music certainly has.

Even rarer than 'Say No More', 'Rebirth' was the second of two albums from Wellington's remarkable folk/rock group, Tamburlaine. Released in 1973 this album saw the group become a quartet, featuring Steve Robinson, Rob Winch, Mark Hansen and Simon Morris, with Dennis Leong having left.
