"At least one of ya let's me have the girl mom experience," Osamu's ma often said as she braided her hair before school. Osamu, with sleep in her eyes and a grumbling tummy, just smiled and tried to be patient as the woman painstakingly parted her hair into three equal parts.

It wasn't like it was hard, or painful. Her ma had gentle hands, always careful not to pull too much or tie too tight. This was a ritual between the two that had always brought a sort of comfort to Osamu. Part of it was knowing just how much her ma enjoyed being allowed to do it, to have "girl time" with one of her daughters. Another part of it was having something between them that she didn't have to share with her twin - for more that thirty seconds, that is.

"Atsumu, at least brush it? People are gonna think I'm makin' ya sleep in the backyard."

"Well, whaddaya think?" Atusmu says, posing in front of his propped up phone and swapping two shirts on hangers back and forth. "Which one goes best with these pants?"

"Tsumu, ya've seen what I wear," Osamu says tiredly, voice a little tinny coming through the video call. "How th'fuck should I know?"

"Oh my god, yer useless," Atsumu groans, turning to face his floor-length mirror and holding one of the shirts up to his neck. "Might as well be talkin' to a house plant."

"That's what I've been tellin' ya," Osamu chuckles, but he stays on the call. "Why don'tcha just wear somethin' yer comfortable in, like yer favourite jeans?"

"Omi said smart-casual, I can't wear jeans," Atsumu says, voice cracking a little, and he sinks down onto his bed. "Fuck, I think I'm freakin' out. Am I freakin' out?"

"Just a lil' bit," Osamu says, and Atsumu can hear his smirk through the phone. "Seriously, Tsumu, relax. He's gonna be happy to see ya even if yer belt doesn't match yer shoes, or whatever."

#wipwednesday i started writing the miya4 spn au that's been living in my head for over a year and it already hurts!

"Ya don't remember anythin', Tsumu?" Kita waited until Atsumu somewhat settled the starved animal inside him to ask.

He remembered the panic in Osamu's eyes when they both smelled sulfur, the way doors of the abandoned shed they had been cornered into rattled against its hinges, the sound of growling that had every hair on his body standing.

Most of all, Atsumu remembered the way Osamu screamed his name as he helplessly watched the hellhounds rip him to shreds.

"Nah," he said. "Remember dyin'. That's about it." Kita and Aran shared a inscrutable look. "Where's Samu?"

Aran scoffed, shaking his head. "Wish we knew. He answers calls every so often, but fer the most part, he's been real… distant, ya know. Since."

Atsumu frowned. Osamu had always been harder to reach, but if there were two people in the world he actually kept close, it was the two men sitting across the table from him. He wasn't happy to hear his brother hadn't kept them close during his absence. "When's the last time ya saw him?"

Kita's sigh told Atsumu he wouldn't like the answer. "When we buried ya."

He realized, suddenly, he had no idea how long he'd been dead for. "When was that?"

"Little over a year ago," Aran answered solemnly.

All at once, the emotions that had been precariously stacked behind a wall came crashing into him, making him dizzy. A year meant Osamu had been forced through all four seasons without his twin. Meant he'd turned twenty-seven by himself. Hadn't even visited his grave. Atsumu's eyes welled with tears. He hid his face in the crook of his elbow where it was braced on the table, consumed by second-hand grief.

He wasn't supposed to be gone that long. He should have found a way back, a way out.
