One of the many Plume moths that has visited our Perth Hills garden this week. This one looks like it’s playing an invisible trombone #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
So many Plume moths (Stangeia xerodes) at the moth light tonight! #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
After a couple of warm spring days in the Perth Hills, our moth tent is currently covered in these lovely Plume moths, Stangeia xerodes #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
We had the first really warm spring evening of the season this weekend, which brought a good variety of moths to our Perth Hills moth light, including: Fungi Snout Painted Cup Moth caterpillar Rhinodia undiferaria Dichromodes leptozona #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
Apparently today is Butterfly Big Day, a global day-long #iNaturalist butterflying event 🦋 So, here’s an opportunistic iPhone picture of an Australian Painted Lady (Vanessa kershawi) I spotted on my walk today. #ausinverts #butterfly #Lepidoptera #wildoz www.urbanbutterflies.org/science/butt...
Dasypodia selenophora - Southern Moth Moth 🤎💙🖤 Four of these fabulous moths visited our Perth Hills moth light last night, always nice to see these beauties! #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
Nicodamus mainae (I think) One of the Red and Black spiders, this guy really stood out against the sandy soil of Wandoo National Park. Although bright red in colour, these spiders are not as venomous as some of their Aussie cousins 🕷️ #ausinverts #spiders #arachnids #wildoz #inaturlalist
Arotrophora cosmoplaca After a warm spring day there was much more activity at the moth light, including this new observation for our Perth Hills garden. Seems these leaf roller moths are rarely seen with only 6 other records on #inaturalist #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera
Setocoris sp. - Sundew Bug (I think) These tiny plant bugs are often found in association with carnivorous sundews (Drosera sp.), where they steal the sundew’s food. This bug was on a Stylidium, rather than a Drosera, which made it much easier to spot. #ausinverts #wildoz #inaturalist #Hemiptera
The male Peacock jumping spiders are just so outrageous! This one was in Perth WA, Maratus hortorum, named after my friends Fred and Jean Hort.
One of the drawbacks of being so woolly on a wet winter morning 🐛💧 A caterpillar we spotted recently on a cool winter’s morning in an area north of Perth. No idea what this guy is destined to metamorphose into 🦋🔎 #mothsmatter #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
The mystery of the missing Bogong moths as backyard moth traps fail (so far) to record any of the 14,000 moths tagged at the end of last summer 🔎🦋 #mothsmatter #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist #citizenscience www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09...
Scientists optimistic despite losing 14,000 tagged bogong moths
Scientists tagged thousands of bogong moths using paper and eyelash glue in an attempt to track their flight path. Now they cannot find a single one.

Spotted this striking #MysteryMoth last week while exploring Wandoo National Park, an area of wandoo eucalypt forest around 80km east of Perth. This moth is clearly a Curved Horn moth, but I haven’t been able ID it further than that yet 🦋🔎 #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist

A rather lovely Northern Emerald (Prasinocyma rhodocosma) These moths can be seen around most parts of Australia, the exception being South Australia where these moths have not been recorded. #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
It might still be winter here in Western Australia, but that didn't stop this Southern Marbled Gecko (Christinus marmoratus) from making a nighttime visit to our moth light recently 🦎🦋 #ausreptiles #ausinverts #wildoz #reptiles #gecko #lizards #mothsmatter #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
Hippotion celerio - Vine Hawkmoth We had Vine Hawkmoth visit our Perth Hills garden this month, our first in at least 18 months. #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
This rather handsome fellow visited our Perth Hills garden in early August. One of the Lappet moths (I think), he's certainly well dressed for the cooler winter weather #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
I thought we had a new moth to our Perth Hills garden light... turns out it was actually a Caddis Fly! This also led me to learn about the superorder Amphiesmenoptera, which contains both Lepidoptera and Trichoptera #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Amphiesmenoptera #Trichoptera #inaturalist
A #MysteryMoth from last November 🔎🦋 We can’t ID this tiny visitor to our Perth Hills garden at the end of last year, although likely in Tineoidea. ID suggestions always welcome #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
A rather striking micro moth seen in our Perth Hills garden last week. This moth is striking in both its details and posture! I think this a Leaf Blotch Miner moth, possibly a Wattle Miner (Parectopa alysidota), although not common in WA. #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
A few warmer days over the last week has brought a few more moths into our Perth Hills garden, including this beautiful but undescribed Dinophalus species. This is only our 3rd record of this species over the last 3 years #teammoth #ausinverst #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist

One of this evening’s moth visitors is this rather eye-catching Thudaca haplonota #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidopteta #inaturalist
A couple of warmer days last week brought a few new visitors to our Perth Hills moth light, including another #MysteryMoth 🔎🦋 I think this is a Tortricine Leafroller Moth but I can’t ID it further than that… so any ID suggestions welcomed #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
Moth trap failure last night, so for the last day of #NationalMothWeek here are some of the moths we recorded at this time last year. While our moth numbers in the Perth Hills are low through winter, we still get quite a bit of diversity. #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
A beautiful pink sky for #sunset followed by a 22° halo around the moon this evening in the Perth Hills 🌖 Suggestion of rain for tomorrow 🌧️ #weather #PerthWeather #wildoz #nature 🌿
A #MysteryMoth for #NationalMothWeek This small moth was a new visitor to our Perth Hills garden this week. I haven’t been able to ID it yet but that striking resting position makes me think it’s likely in the subfamily Yponomeutinae #teammoth #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
A rather smart new visitor to our Perth Hills garden this week. This is one of the Bagworm moths (Psychidae), but I haven’t been able to ID this moth more specifically than that. ID suggestions are always welcome. #teammoth #NationalMothWeek #ausinverts #wildoz #Lepidoptera #inaturalist
