SLEEPERTOWN | A Mobile Public Art Programme – walk · listen · create
SLEEPERTOWN is a mobile public art project that explores the spaces between waking and dreaming, using art, sound, movement and storytelling to transform everyday journeys into moments of imagination and connection. Utilising the Echoes App, we began in Ireland and have since visited communities in Northern Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Italy. Our current iteration is now live in Dún Laoghaire, just outside Dublin City.
Designed to move through public space, SLEEPERTOWN invites audiences to experience familiar places differently. Through a combination of creative interventions, participatory experiences and mobile artworks, the project creates temporary worlds within the city — encouraging people to slow down, listen, look closer and consider the stories held within the places they pass through every day within their hometown.
The project was founded in 2020 but each iteration is different and works with local practitioners in each of its new locations. With this in mind, SLEEPERTOWN is rooted in walking and listening as creative acts. It considers community not simply as a backdrop for art, but as a living, changing environment filled with voices, memories, sounds and possibilities. By bringing art directly into streets and shared spaces, SLEEPERTOWN aims to make cultural experiences more accessible, informal and unexpected, reaching people who may not traditionally engage with galleries or conventional arts venues.
The mobile nature of the project is central to its identity. SLEEPERTOWN can travel, adapt and respond to different communities and environments, creating opportunities for local participation and allowing each location to shape the work. It is a project about movement, but also about pause, creating small moments of wonder within the ordinary rhythm of everyday life.To date we have worked with diverse international practitioners including writers, performers, and activists, to artists, composer, and musicians including IFTA & BAFTA nominated actress Róisín Gallagher and Oscar Nominated screen composer John Powell.
SLEEPERTOWN ultimately proposes a public art experience that is playful, accessible and place-responsive, rooted in walking while opening up conversations about belonging, memory, imagination and how we experience our shared environments.
