I have been hearing from parents, families and educators in Ward 8 about how difficult and destabilizing the planned school closures by Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) will be. I am very concerned about the proposal to close 16 schools (including Field Elementary)

Neighbors, earlier today there was a mass shooting in the Loring Park neighborhood at 15 E Grant St. I am heartbroken to say that there were several victims, including police officers, and there were three fatalities, including the shooter.

I had a great time touring the new all-electric Public Housing duplex in Ward 8 that was recently completed ahead of schedule! These are family-sized units and we desperately need them. There are over 3000 families on the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority’s waitlist.

We had a good and productive meeting last night with the Central Area Neighborhood Development Organization (CANDO). I joined County Commissioner Angela Conley and community members for a conversation about the Mayor’s proposed 2027 budget, and the property tax increase of 11.3% that it includes.
I had a great time touring Sabathani’s geothermal heating and cooling project that is currently underway. This project is a perfect example of the kind of work our city needs to be more sustainable and climate resilient.

This week I was at the MN Cooperative Summit in Duluth. I learned about the long and storied history of co-ops in MN and how they allow everyone to thrive in our economy.
Our city is reeling from mass shootings and gun violence this past weekend. I want you to know that the City takes this very seriously. My colleagues and I are taking steps to help ensure all of our neighborhoods are safer.
I am excited to be working with community leaders towards a pocket park on 38th Street & 4th Ave. We had a great meeting about this project today. This community-driven project will bring much needed investment and attention to the 38th street corridor.

At next Thursday's Council meeting we will be voting on Municipal Consent for the Lyndale Ave reconstruction. The plan from the County is clearly a compromise between the two main positions: more safety improvements vs. no change.
