Excited to see this project finally come together 🥳 I used the timing of nucleolar assembly at the 8-cell stage as an assay for concentration-dependent phase separation (doi.org/10.1016/j.cu...), but could never explain why they don't appear at the 4-cell stage. Now we know!! 🤓

The nucleolus is the largest condensate in the nucleus and the site where ribosomes are built. It has no membrane. It assembles by phase separation, components demixing from the nucleoplasm into a droplet. So what decides when it forms? 🧵🪱💧 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
