Senator Peter Welch

U.S. Senator proudly serving all Vermonters. ⛰️ Husband to Margaret. Hiking and skiing when I can.

Rural communities in both red and blue states have been hit hard by the overdose epidemic. That’s why I’m leading a bill with Senator Capito to get more resources to rural communities so they can prevent and treat addiction.

Today, Republicans on the Judiciary Committee are planning to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination. He’s one of the most unqualified Attorney General nominees in modern history. I will vote no.

Todd Blanche has made it clear: he’s President Trump's lawyer, not America's lawyer. He signed off on a slush fund deal for President Trump’s supporters. He disrespected Epstein survivors and bungled releasing the files. Blanche has no business being Attorney General.

All around the country, doctors who care for seniors are struggling to stay afloat because Medicare is simply not paying them enough for their services.   That's why I’m leading a bill with Senator Boozman to increase payments so seniors can keep access to the providers they rely on.

Since last year, President Trump's tariffs have forced Vermont small businesses to pay an extra $195 million. On top of that, fewer Canadian tourists are visiting, causing a massive blow to our tourism economy. Trump’s tariffs are a tax on small businesses.

Jay Clayton has made it clear that he’ll put the interests of President Trump above the interests of keeping Americans safe. I voted against his confirmation as Director of National Intelligence.

President Trump is demanding that Senate Republicans ignore all other issues and pass the SAVE America Act. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The SAVE America Act is an undemocratic voter suppression bill. I'll vote against it as many times as it takes to defeat it.

Secretary Hegseth testified that President Trump's war with Iran has already cost $37.5 billion. We could've extended ACA health care discounts to more than 21 million people for an entire year for less money than we've spent in five months of war.

President Trump's nutrition cuts have now kicked more than 1.5 million children off food assistance. Trump is taking food away from children to pay for massive tax cuts to his billionaire friends.

The facts of this case remain the same. Mohsen is in this country legally. President Trump is trying to deport him because he doesn’t like that Mohsen non-violently advocated for peace in Gaza. It's a fundamental violation of free speech. It’s an attack on the Constitution.

The ruling from the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York overturns a previous decision by a federal judge in Vermont, which likened the government's efforts to expel him and other activists to McCarthyist repression.

A handful of food industry giants are consolidating power—they’re using it to squeeze out small farms and take advantage of farm workers. That’s why I’m reintroducing legislation to give small farms a level playing field and protect the workers who put food on our tables.

Trump’s speech was full of lies and frankly embarrassing. He lost in 2020 and he’s trying to scare people away from voting in 2026. The bottom line: our elections are secure, safe, and free. If Republicans give a damn about our democracy they need to stand up and push back.

Dani Bensky, Epstein survivor: Todd Blanche has been at the helm of the release of nude images of survivors, the outing of Jane Does, and the exposure of more than 100 victims' identifying information and documents describing horrific acts of abuse, including my own.

Dani Bensky, Epstein survivor: The survivors in this room know there are investigative leads because they are our stories. Mr. Blanche knows it, yet he has chosen not to pursue them. His actions have destroyed survivors’ trust.

When Alex Pretti was killed, a DHS spokesperson said he wanted to "massacre law enforcement." It took video evidence for Americans to learn DHS lied. Trump and Republicans gave ICE $38 billion. It's unacceptable that we have more ICE shootings, and still no body camera footage.
