a thing you also see here is that wurman is obsessed with status and seems to believe that having a law degree and tenure makes him a superior human being who does not have to engage with lesser intellects. his whole posture betrays a deep insecurity.

At the risk of fanning the flames of this: IW appears to believe that harsh criticism of him personally justifies restricting the academic freedom of everyone. If not, I’d like to hear him say that newly minted academics should be free to say he’s trafficking in bigotry.

This is, indeed, a mask off moment. Here a newly minted academic declares without a hint of self doubt that a proposition obvious to almost everyone not too long ago, and obvious to many now—that not all cultures have the same contemporary capacity for constitutional self- government—is bigoted and racist. It is arguments like this and the cavalier confidence with which they are freely asserted in the halls of academia that make everything Trump wants to do to the universities seem so eminently justified.
