NEW: For @indiewire.com, I spoke to Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, Jamie Selkirk and *many* more for an oral history of The Frighteners as it turns 30. Specifically, how the commercial flop drove innovation at Wētā, paved the way for The Lord of the Rings, and was just a whole lot of fun to make.

Peter Jackson and more reflect on 'The Frighteners,' their first Hollywood film, and the growth of Wētā for its 30th anniversary. Oral history.

Unfortunately, with my wife being essentially forced into retirement our financial situation has gone from bad to worse. we are still waiting on a number of checks & reimbursements but have past due bills & expenses we can no longer burden our families with & need help. (Thread)

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

To the surprise of no one, Arrow has yet again made Shout Factory look terrible. SF put out “A Chinese Ghost Story” trilogy as Blu-ray only w/ their typical bad cover art. Then Arrow comes along & offers the set in 4K UHD w/ more extras & vastly improved cover art.

Say what you want about needless remakes. (No movie is necessary. Every film is technically unneeded.) The fact that Jordan is directing this himself is what’s exciting about it. Creed 3 was extremely stylish and MBJ applying his anime sensibilities to a suave heist story is really enticing.

I honestly was sort of jazzed at the thought of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider. But Shawn Levy seems like an awful match of director and material. I don’t even really dislike any of Levy’s work and enjoy a couple of his films. There is just nothing he’s done that screams “Ghost Rider” to me.

The Paramount and Warner Bros merger is officially on hold. The merger will not move forward until June 1, 2027 OR until the courts provide a ruling on the lawsuits facing the merger.

For my next Summer of (Movie) Love entry, I’m celebrating THE HITCHER. John Ryder was more terrifying to me than Freddy Krueger as a kid & the film still feels like a cinematic powder keg: from-the-desk-of-the-horror-chick.ghost.io/summer-of-mo... Open to both free & paid subscribers- thanks y’all!

Anti-pro wrestling folks always say, "You know it's fake, right? Watch a movie" & they miss the point. Wrestling is actual live people doing incredibly athletic sleight of hand in front of you. It's performers interacting with a crowd of actual live people, it's the realest fake thing there is.

My general feeling on the idea of films & high media generated with AI is that it's very funny to me that there are people who don't know that audiences want to see performers perform and actors act. Incredible declaration that you're a simpleton to not know that media consumers are craft enjoyers.

One of the greatest matches of all time. The kind of thing they write songs about. I don’t even know how many times I’ve watched it since it first happened. I firmly believe that pro wrestling as an art form is at its best when, frankly, everything looks like it fucking hurts.

Also, if you've never seen Samoa Joe vs. Necro Butcher in its entirety before or just haven't in a while, it's available for free on the IWA Mid-South YouTube channel:

I came here, in part, to get away from knowing when people on Twitter post dumb shit. But it’s inescapable all because I want to talk and read about my wholly unrelated niche interests. Depressing. It seems like if folks don’t have something to mockingly react to, they don’t have much else to say.

I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”

Don't really want to have to do this but if you know me at all you know why I have to do this. Looking to raise at least $5k with a stretch of $10 coz I don't even have a full time job. Lawyers are expensive! Anyway link below.
