Aquaman week 11 part 1. Necrus' mechanical defender the Cruel One, actual straight-up pirate #CaptainDemo, Sub-Diego police officer #ChandraAbbot, and headmaster of Atlantis' school for magic #MagisterLoke.

Planned to save the ships/suits I’m drawing until the end, but I wanted to get this robotic WMD out since I don’t think I’ll draw anymore characters from Necrus, and I wanted to revamp how things appear in the Dimensional Rift.

When there, black and white invert and colors become saturated. everything has a red tint and sketchy style as the dimension fades in and out of existence. I want it to feel like an underwater Hell, the very water tainted with blood and magic. A desperate world barely holding together.

I’ve been thinking about an Aquaman game (VERY similar to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom) and Necrus would be a cool replacement for the Blood Moon mechanic.

Imagine swimming through the ocean, then the water turns red, shadows inky black, and the sea life no longer bid your call. Overtaken by fear and bloodlust, they attack more fiercely in greater numbers. The Black City rises somewhere in the depths. Do you dare challenge it’s protector or swim for safety?

One of the unfortunate people trying to hold Sub Diego together. Even more unfortunate that it sent her insane. She becomes a serial killer and works her own case alongside Aquaman.

I could see her coming back, either as a recurring enemy, or as a shaky ally with a clean bill of mental health. Sub Diego could use all the help it can get, but I could also see her drifting off to a less hostile environment.

An actual, honest to goodness, flat-out pirate.

He has a submersible 16th century pirate ship armed to the tooth with advanced weaponry, including his Laser-Sword (a sword with a laser on it, not a light-sabre sadly) and Oxygen Pistol which creates oxygen pockets by disturbing water molecules. He uses that last one to suffocate people. He wants to, what else, take over Atlantis. Apparently can breath underwater and lives a long time.

I want him to be old friends with the Fisherman. Though, if I ever got the chance to do an animated series I’d have an episode where he and the Fisherman team up and have it end with the Fisherman losing his host body and taking Demo as his next one.

He ran the Silent School, Atlantis’ school for magic and the place they store their magic items, and allied himself with Corum Rath when he tried to take over Atlantis. His magic was used to enforce Rath’s rules, and he encases Atlantis in the Crown of Thorns (an ancient artifact which casts a protective network of magic around the city). Loke believed Rath was using too much magic and fears the consequences, so he turned on him and Rath killed him.

Of course, he IS magic and that means he can always be brought back. He trains Tempest in the New 52, so he’s another under-utilized magic villain who could easily be high level.

The Silent School itself is already a cool concept. Imagine all the characters and stories that could come from there.

A long time ago, I read a chapter of Peter David's Aquaman run with Deadline in it. I misremembered the chapter and, as it turns out, Deadline is not enough of an Aquaman villain for this project. Too bad I finished the drawing before I checked... Figured I might as well post him.

Aquaman week 10 part 1. The #Aqualad #JacksonHyde, the hive-minded #Omniguard, Aquaman's less loving bride the queen of Hy-Brasil, and the Tritonian heroine #Sheeva.

When I started this project I got asked a few times when I’d draw this Aqualad. Since I only have a half remembered Teen Titans issue and the Young Justice show (which changes a lot about him) I wanted to make sure I got his parents done first so I could do him right. I went with, what I believe, is a newer design since it already brought in elements from the Young Justice version and I like the dyed blonde (it makes me think he did it because he respects Aquaman and the blonde hair being considered a curse which led to Aquaman becoming a thing).

I like how he went for the older red of OG Aqualad’s costume while Lorena Marquez went for blue similar to when Garth became tempest.

Since he’s Black manta’s son, his mom is from Xebel, and he was heavily associated with eh surface heroes the Teen Titans I didn’t keep too hard to my usual design motifs. I emphasized the fins on his legs a bit but didn’t change his outfit much at all since I wanted him to easily slip between worlds and feel more like a generalized hero.

The Omniguard are an alien race with a shared consciousness who try to use Tempest’s magic as a power source for their ship. They can be a single super-form or split up into at least 3 individuals with their own powers.

Tempest later helps them charge their ship and they leave on good terms, but I think leaving ti there would be a mistake.

The Aqua-Family is a powerful team. Mera alone is crazy tough, but add on Tempest and the legions of Atlantean Men-of-War, the Secret School, etc. Now imagine them going up against a hive-mind running an entire planet of supper powered being. We only encountered a few of them but who knows how many abilities the Omniguard home-world has at its disposal. imagine a story where the Aqua-Family has to fight an entire planet of what are essentially alien X-Men (or a meta-human Borg). Their toy-like aesthetic belies infinite potential for battles, while there hive-mind allows easy navigation of the conflict in their stories.

Hy-Brasil is one of the Lost Cities of Atlantis and its inhabitants have mutated over the years similarly to the Trench. When they were part of the surface, their domed city was the main point of protection for the realm. As a result they have a large supply of ancient weaponry.

I haven’t read much with her, but their Queen was depicted as ruthless and cunning. She attempts to get Aquaman to become her new King threatening that if he refuses her people will tear him apart. She even tries to have him forced to kill Dolphin for accidentally firing on the city, after having looked her over.

A Tritonian who becomes the trio of young aquatic characters who got to the surface to fight crime and better relations between undersea and surface dwellers, calling themselves the Landlubbers. She acts as the hands of their whale member Blubber.

I wasn’t going to include them, but a comment made me realize how much potential they have to expand the world outside of Aquaman’s reach. They are a group of young people going out of their way to better relations between their people and the surface on their own, not as an extension of Aquaman’s rule but as an extension of his ideals.

Titania is defending an impressed Paige while arrows fly around them. I was trying to go for a kids-story-book kind of low detail castle in the background. Not sure how well that meshed with the washed-out colors.

Toonman is leaning on top of Muenster Mash's shoulder and using his chin as dip for a bowl of chips. Muenster Mash is not amused with his antics.

Since both characters are living cartoons I gave them different shading from usual. MM has harsher black/blue shading to mimic 90s superhero cartoons while Toonman has solid black but only on his overalls like simpler 30s ones. I also gave Toonman a slight gradient to make him appear a bit overexposed.

I included the image before I cropped it to fit the cover format.

The #Aquamarines #GreatWhite, #Stone, #Octo, And #Orca.

I don't have much to say about the Aquamarines individually since they are a bit of a unit, but I like the concept of the team as a whole.

They feel like an earth-based version of the Deep Six, and a somewhat weaker one as a result. There's more to stories than power levels though and these characters have potential to explore a part of Aquaman's world we haven't seen much of in this project.

As members of the US marine corps they give the more antagonistic side of the US government a face for Aquaman to interact with. They were enhanced specifically to assassinate him when the US and Atlantis were at war.

A different project didn't work out the way I wanted, so I turned it into this. The 4 main Hulks (Savage/Green, Mr.Fixit/Grey, Prof/Merged and the Big Man/Devil) along with Bruce's Triad of Guardians, Glow and Goblin (I would love to see all 3 manifest as full Hulks).

Bruce's "Hulks" are a lot more fascinating than just representations of his emotions. They are the things he rejects about himself, cut away and left to germinate into new avatars of his will. The unloved children of his mind who often hate and reject him as he does them.

Bruce Banner is a great example of early Marvel's tendency to create "imperfect" of even "unheroic" heroes with each persona another glimpse into his often abrasive "true" personality. I feel that the most telling aspect of the Hulks is how they all represent a piece of Bruce and that barely any of them have a nice word to say about him and more often than not they seem to hate him.

My drawing tablet wasn't working, so I tried drawing on a different device and now I'm putting a bunch of #Aquaman characters into a height chart. #Fisherman #BlackManta #DCComics #FanArt

I like Aquaman a ton and never loved how he was viewed by the non-comic reading fanbase. He is a combination of fantasy, sci-fi, super-hero, and barbarian tropes that come together to make a character with plenty to offer any reader.
I wanted to capture his dynamism while keeping him feeling kind and approachable.

I feel arch-villains should visually contrast their heroes. While Aquaman is outwardly open, colourful and inviting, Black Manta is reserved, monochrome, and hostile. I imagine him as a guarded obsessive whose fixation on Aquaman is nearly out of his control. A highly capable badass, but one who is alone even in a room full of his Manta-Men followers.

The Fisherman is fun. His weird hat is a parasite which controls the human body. I imagine him as a more typical pirate than most of the other villains. My take steals from anything on the water, using his advanced technology, and sells it to other villains. I would use him in more humorous stories and as a support villain to contrast the horror of what he is, while leaving room to develop him later on. Since the parasite is so old I would write him like an old school pirate and give him pirate-like motivations. He indulges in the world, knowing that if he gets in over his head he can ditch his host and start over.

G'nort, #GreenLantern from the planet G'newt. He was recruited by fake Guardians to fill the GL Corps with incompetent Lanterns but Guy Gardener vouched for him to join for real. He's a silly, easily fooled, goof with a good heart who is trying his best. #DCComics #FanArt #Gnort

In the game he’d scramble around in silly, but hard to hit, patterns. He wouldn’t hit hard or be able to take many himself (opening him up for funny accidents and rage quits) but his slapstick constructs don’t cost much and can trip up or stall opponents. He would focus on annoying the enemies, drawing them towards him for an ambush or scampering around them as a hard to follow scout.

Larvox has a few variations on their look in comics. I like the "thick hotdog" meets "insect gourd" one. I kept the coloration similar to their older look and applied it to my favourite features.

Considering their people's connection to the nature of their planet, I would bias them to nature based constructs. I think they could use their multiple legs to speedily scurry around the field setting up trap plants which poison or paralyse. They could toss enemies around using thorny vines and keep allies safe with leafy shields.

I like the panther sidekick a lot more than Iron Shadow herself. Animal sidekicks are a fun trope and it ties into the circus ending.

Since I wasn't super into the design I tried working on my perspective this time. I made the whip look more like energy than an actual whip just for fun.

#GreenMan is an amphibious Alpha #GreenLantern from Uxor. His planet is soaked in water and his people have gills beneath their jaws. Aside form him, his people have no individuality and tell one another apart by their bumpy head patterns. #DCComics #FanArt

I wanted to accentuate his aquatic features, so I added a few gill slits on his neck along with the ones on his jaw and gave his body a more blueish hue. His body and uniform are more glossy than my other designs. Without the uniform he'd have an easy time blending into the shimmering water. Since he likes being an individual I countered this by giving his uniform more glowing bits that would make him stand out instead of blend in.

I originally began this project with a Marvel Rivals type game in mind. I imagine him using lillypad constructs to fling himself and those around him across the map, firing sharks, knocking enemies back with waves, or diving into water to gain a speed boost and escape pursuit when his ring is low on power.
