The black astronaut (Tarlton) in a comic book published by Bill Gaines as featured in the story "Judgment Day," where he evaluates a planet populated by sentient robots. This story addresses themes of segregation and equality, highlighting the astronaut's realization of the need for societal evolution. The plot, which scrutinizes a segregated society and features a black astronaut, went against many of the popular racist beliefs at the time and gave the Comics Code Authority the perfect excuse to drive the legendary publisher, Bill Gaines, out of business. Gaines was systematically removed from the comics industry soon after this issue by the highly unethical other comic book companies by means of a sham "Comics Code Authority" that was at least partially designed by the other members of the 'authority' (including DC Comics) to kill the wildly popular EC Comics, which it succeeded in doing. Gaines responded by starting MAD Magazine, as magazines were outside the sham 'authority' of the so-called 'Comics Code'.
