Took me WAY TOO LONG to realize you can import VIDEOS as planes in blender, which just opened the fucking floodgates for me to try more ambitious VFX because it's so fast to iterate in! Literally all you need is the "Images as Planes" addon, and pay attention to the Material > Shader options!
