For the current Worlds Beyond Number campaign, I've had to figure out how to score scenes that are genuinely scary and exciting using (primarily) a big band / swing palette. I love writing for big band, but "fear" is not an emotion you're likely to associate with that sound!

One of the great challenges of getting people to engage with art is irreducibility. They'll ask what they're supposed to "get" out of a Rothko or Pierrot Lunaire or whatever and take your inability to reply in a pithy summation as an indictment of the art itself. But the art is irreducible!
