I am always thinking about how Peg Lautenschlager took weeks and days and then hours of talking with the last Act 10 protesters who would not leave the Capitol when ordered and then marched out with them after they reached agreement. Someone else worked with her too; help me remember who that was.

So it seems like the street is closed again, businesses that were open are now closed, the police monitor was injured, people have been injured and arrested, and things are way more dangerous than they were before 5 a.m. this morning bc there are a ton of police with guns and riot gear there

Every time I went to the memorial space it seemed like a bunch of people thoughtfully, patiently trying to help each other live and grieve together. but you know cars and property are the most important things. anyway who is gonna challenge Satya’s reelection campaign?

I’ve voted in 30+ elections and can count on one hand the candidates I’ve been *excited* to vote for. No one knows the future, but I’m hopeful that long-awaited excitement can be powerful in Wisconsin in November.

I have no idea where to follow breaking local news without Twitter. I’m on here, I’m on reddit, I'm watching instagram stories, I’m even looking on Facebook. And I still have what feels like 1/10 of the insight I would have had on Twitter five years ago

I am sympathetic to this very sensitive moment and understand the argument for body cameras, but they do not stop this kind of violence and implementing them cannot mean more money goes to Madison Police. Drain their budget, don’t pad it.

I do believe that abolition is the only true reform to our racist legal system. In the meantime, I asked some bare minimum things of my Alder.

An email that reads: In the last year, especially since the closing of Dairy Drive, police presence in my neighborhood near Breese Steven’s Field has grown constant. There are often police parked outside of my house doing nothing. I have encountered police in busy BRT stations, near the bathrooms at McPike Park, and inside Festival and Cargo Coffee Shop. All they seem to be doing is harassing unhoused people — often 3-5 officers standing over one seated person. It has always made me nervous to have so many people wandering my neighborhood with guns that they could pull out at any moment. Yesterday’s murder of Corey Ruiz, as well as the murder of Tony Robinson, Richard Lee Johnson, and too many others, shows how founded that fear was.Email continued: As my representative on the common council, I ask that you first heed the demands of Urban Triage made in reference to Ruiz’ murder. In the near and medium future I ask that you also push that the city adopt these policies: A fully empowered independent police monitor. More safe, secure, climate-controlled housing for my unhoused neighbors. No more budget increases for MPD. Funding redirected from police to organizations like Madison Street Medicine, the Beacon, the Dane County Homeless Justice Initiative, and others that effectively provide homelessness services. A significant reduction in how many officers can carry guns and where those officers are permitted to carry guns.
