I have been doing more time consuming cooking over the past month that a few friends are teasing that I'm running a small restaurant from home and my roommate is trying to figure out how to legally sell the food 😂 I need a problem to be resolved so I can close this at-home restaurant 😅

The OMB grants rule isn’t final yet, but they want to enact it Oct 1! It would let political appointees override peer review & cancel research midstream. We made the comments, now we need to call Congress and let them know what effect this will have scientific research. io.aibs.org/omb-action
Me the last 24hrs: posts about shark facts, pro inclusion, tagged as a co-author in a neurodiversity paper, and donating blo0d Random big shark account I've never directly interacted with before: blocked me Feels like a great example of why we need pro-diversity and less toxicity... 🙃
About 50% do not complete their program and a majority of that is due to lab and university related problems, NOT the ability of the person. There's a reason academia is nicknamed the "ivory tower". We need to do better at protecting those who are capable and are intentionally pushed out/removed.
The pretty ivory towers won’t save us. It’s already happening. 👀🥺
Ameaka Fatima Nkempu, a Johns Hopkins University researcher in public health, was detained by ICE while boarding a domestic flight. She says she is Cameroonian in a Medium article that she authored. As of Thursday morning, the ICE Online Detainee Locator did not list where she was being held.
Me: going in to donate "Power reds" (aka a larger rbc donation) Nurse looks at my tattoos and piercings (some gauged), smiles, and asks if I'm ok with an 18 gauge needle Me: Yes, yes I am lol 😅 (Though there are people w/ tattoos and piercings that don't like needles and/or blood.)
According to the NSF, only 1.8% of women in the US hold a PhD So, when you see them represented on tv or see extra toxicity and problems in the work place we should both extra cheer (tv) AND stand up to defend them (toxicity). We need to help create solutions and support going forward!

Dyk: The lateral line picks up mechanosensation vibrational stimuli ...but... It's not the only mechanosensation based receptor in #chondrichthyans! There are also other cell types that pick up pressure and stretch that are also mechanosensory stimuli! #sharks #rays #skates #chimaeras 🦈

Having continuing problems from over a year ago makes it hard to recover Yet last night, I was nerding out with a friend and we both, excitedly, went down a rabbit hole of a new med and the sodium channel interaction Soooo...yeah...I don't think I can fully burnout from something I love this much

I've been going down some serious rabbit holes of #neuroplasticity this past week with #proprioception themed in. (I'll share the 2nd rabbit hole topic later.) If you also geek out about this please drop papers you've enjoyed! One that I found this week: www.frontiersin.org/journals/hum...

It's been a very long 6 months but I can say that I am also grateful for a lot of things. I was forced into new situations, leaned on friends, and kept enthusiasm for the things I love. Today is a day where a song is on repeat. This one always moves my soul 💜 What's a song that moves you?
A cool paper looking at how different textures are explored! 🧪 #neuro #neuroscience #NeuroSkyence #touch #somatosensation #haptics #SensorimotorControl
When we touch a surface, we do not just passively receive information, we actively shape the interaction. In our new preprint, we investigated how forces, vibrations, and movements during active exploration of a texture relate to its perceived hardness, slipperiness, and roughness.
Do not cram alt text with keywords just to improve search engine optimization. This will hinder alt text’s true purpose: improving accessibility. Focus on describing the photo's content. Search engine optimization should not be the goal for writing good alt text.
(Q at the end) I think losing my biggest piece of body dysmorphia (thank you top surgery...even if I still need to save and pay for a 2nd round 🙃) has unlocked new gender play for me. I like #agender instead of genderfluid for me still but I've got 2 friends, who I asked... #pride #PrideMonth 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈

Taking #pride with me to every social dance during and beyone #PrideMonth! Always happy to chat science, dance a song, or whatever if you see me in passing anywhere :) From your friendly #queer #agender #trans neighbor :). 🏳️🌈
Happy #PrideMonth! To celebrate, I'm starting a thread of readings on queerness in animals/evolution, and keep adding throughout the month. I'll include a mix of writing for popular audiences as well as some scientific articles and book recommendations! 🧪 🏳️🌈 (1/n) Nature has ALWAYS been queer! 🌈
#Academia: What is your advice to brand new Master's and PhD students joining a lab? How does one pitch a thesis idea? Where to start? How to begin a literature search without drowning in papers? (Resource links and personal advice are encouraged with the caveat that each situation is unique.)
I'll put in a rec for phylopic.org! Silhouettes of so many taxa with creative commons and public domain licenses. Great for figures and for teaching!
