I don't know how to reckon with the conflicting information that: 1. "The Citizen Kane of ___" means the best of that thing 2. I don't necessarily think Super Mario 64 is actually the number one best game ever and 3. Super Mario 64 is the Citizen Kane of videogames but, they are all true.

Video games are losing ground in the physical market and, frankly, that's been on its way ever since disk drives stopped being standard in home PCs. But I'm going to be pretty sad if that's the last straw for movies on physical media too. They are coming from the same blu-ray disc factories, mostly.
People who don't understand why Odysseus wanted to hear the sirens' song probably also don't want to taste Switch games or smell the visibly sour milk. You gotta hear it. What are you going to do, not know and be boring?

Indie studios and solo devs are constantly talking about how impossible it is for them in this climate, they also need investment, they also need the industry generally to be healthy. So this "who cares about AAA anyway?" crap I keep seeing is as clueless as it is crass.

Tekchip@tekchip.hathouse.us · last mo.Pretty wild take. As if all existing hardware suddenly vanished. Like there aren't new games that run just fine on that hardware, and older. Sure the economics of hardware and game creation will change but not much else will. Like it or not some subset of gamers are/have been the one game person.
I understand the distaste for AAA, believe me. But no, taking the money out of gaming will not improve games. It will just unemploy developers. There can only be so many hits per year. If they are all small-team indies, that's <300 people in the world making a living making games max. AAA is jobs.

If video game hardware becomes unobtainable for current children, there is no chance of this generation imprinting on it like the last two generations of children have. They will not grow into the adults we have now; the ones spending money on games. Games will end as we know them.
The N64 is so cool. It's still the console I think of when I try to think of a "cool" video game.
I haven't spoken a whole lot about the games industry here lately because, really, what can anyone say. I need neither lie about hope for the future nor make redundant doomerisms others already have. All I can say now is that, while I have kept busy with a few things, I too am looking for more work
