This spring, purple martin boxes were installed on Wolf Haven’s prairie to help these birds return after being displaced by European starlings in the tree snags they historically nested in. American Red Wolf M2403 (Ghost) has really blossomed since arriving at Wolf Haven in January. Injured as a pup, Ghost’s rear left leg had to be amputated, putting him at a disadvantage in his natal family group. Ghost is now often seen with his companion, F2537 (Cassia), thriving in his new home.

The four Mexican wolf brothers living together - M2049 (Kevin), M2050 (Jack), M2051 (Kokopelli), and M2052 (Kola) - are a tight knit and playful family group. While they occasionally get into spats over group dominance, they are most often seen lounging together on their platforms like this.

Our staff are knocking out loads of fence work this summer at our Montana sanctuary. This past week, they removed over 1/4 mile of old barbed wire fence that had not been used in 10+ years - this will allow safer and easier movement of ungulate and bird species across the greater landscape!

Sometimes we just get lucky and a canid walks right into frame! Fifteen-year-old Luca is currently our oldest sanctuary resident, and while he has slowed down over this past year, he still remains regal and relaxed. #wolfhaven #sanctuary #education #conservation #wolves #trailcamera #wolfsanctuary

While enjoying a recent meal, American Red Wolf M2403 (Ghost) had a rather bold raven watching over his shoulder... ravens benefit greatly from wolves by gaining access to high quality protein, but there is always risk in getting too close. We find occasional raven carcasses that are proof of this!

#TBT Carosal (2005-2018) the coyote was the embodiment of "tiny but mighty.” Her small stature didn’t stop her from trash-talking her neighbors & bossing around her companions, though she was never mean to them. Truly a force to be reckoned with, her feisty spirit left a lasting mark at Wolf Haven.

Late spring and early summer is transformational for wolves, as they shed out their thick summer coats for sleek summer looks. There is, however, an awkward "in-between style" that makes us smile and shake our heads. The majestic are temporarily humbled, as wolfdogs Lore and Luca illustrate.

Mexican wolf M1630 (Darko) was recently removed from his family group due to aggression issues. He had been the leader of the group, but was pushed out by his brothers banding together to challenge him. We paired Darko with F1361 (Sedona), where he has been enjoying the smells of his new enclosure!
