Dame Tracey Emin is a brave soul. Using her own personal experiences as her subject matter, she presents the ups and downs of life with raw intensity. Working in textiles, performance and installation art, in neon aphorisms, sculpture and painting, Emin mercilessly dissects moments of joy and suffering in self-portraits and monumental nudes. “The End of Love” is doubly poignant as it references both the painful end of a personal relationship and her devastating cancer diagnosis. She paints her bed with frantic brushwork, drenched in reds and pinks, as she huddles beneath the covers while her cat keeps watch from atop the dresser. Emin is fearless. Her art reflects the warrior she is.

The bird is right of centre of frame, facing the right with its head turned back so the left side is visible. The chicks head can be seen poking out from under the birds wings, just under the tip of its beak.
The bird has a dark cap, turning to a double crest at the top of the head. It has a long, sharp beak with a dark streak from the end of the beak to the eye. The rest of the face is white with chestnut brown at the back of the head and a chestnut ruff, turning to back at the tips. The neck is white with a dark spine and the body is a reddish brown, darker on the back and wings.
The grebettes (or humbugs) are only visible on the head and neck. They are almost stacked on top of each other, with the further chick slightly further back on the Grebes body. They have stark black and white streaks down their face and necks, giving a zebra pattern (or humbug mint) appearance
The foreground is the lake, covered in tiny ripples and reflecting the light to give off a metallic appearance.
The background is also lake water but covered in small pond weeds and other vegetation; mostly just above the surface but with the odd lily pad or large piece of vegetation here and there.

Singh is an Indian photographer whose primary format is the book, which she titles as “Museums”. This image of her friend Mona Ahmed captures the intimacy inherent in much of Singh’s work. She often sells her photographs in boxed collections of loose images so that the image order can be shuffled and rearranged to find new relationships and connections. Her work focuses on people and she prefers to shoot in sequences – so that she can remix the order to find new meanings. The photos included in “Museum of Dance (Mother Loves to Dance)” were shot during the 1980s and 1990s.

Hassan Hajjaj was born in Morocco and grew up in London. A self-taught photographer and performance artist, his work seeks to bring people together to celebrate our commonality rather than dwell on our differences. His portrait photography is ablaze with exuberant colors and patterns, topped off by framing made from mundane items (food tins, etc.). Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, the subject of this portrait, is a British painter and writer of Ghanian heritage. Hajjaj’s “My Rock Stars” series focuses on the diversity of modern British culture, mixing personalities, fashion and origins to create a new whole. The photo series is often accompanied by a video presentation.

Bradford’s mixed media work is the result of a work-intensive process of addition and subtraction. First, he scours his Los Angeles neighborhood for material, collecting detritus and bits and pieces such as discarded advertisement flyers and hair salon end papers. Second, he affixes his found objects to the canvas, building up layers and layers of material. Third, he uses a power sander to remove the surface, exposing the colors and images below via excavation while adding texture and grooves for dimensionality. Collage and décollage, creating large abstracts to reference modern urban life.

Basquiat was a prolific producer over his short career, splashing his creative energy across his canvases as stream of consciousness writ large. He began his artistic pursuits as a graffiti artist, tagging his creations SAMO. His arresting style caught the eye of the Art Establishment in the 1980s: his improvisational yet disciplined chaos set him apart from his contemporaries. His work is filled with patterns, gestural marks, diagrams and text; his images often had meanings only known to himself. In “Wicker”, Basquiat paints: a black skeletal figure inside a wicker basket that explodes with vegetative energy; a disembodied spinal column; a non-descript elephant; a floating camera; and a scary creature face with sharp teeth. He tosses in text of “Henry Armstrong” (a famous boxer) and “47” (reference to Armstrong’s undefeated streak in the 1930s); adds Xeroxed diagrams and symbols in random places. His use of extensive white space creates a visual rhythm that flows in a circular motion. “Wicker” is a large piece, measuring 86” x 98”. What does it all mean? Damned if I know… but I like its energy and originality.

Nick Cave began making his amazing sound suits in the early 1990s, as a response to the brutal police beating of Rodney King: Cave envisioned his suits as a protective covering, to erase preconceptions about race and appearance. His suits have evolved to become uniquely joyful works of art – wearable art that creates sounds and rhythms and movement. Cave incorporates a multiplicity of items – old and new – into his designs. This one has a vintage toy theme: metal tops, mini-globes, noise-makers and horns mixed with embroidered fabrics. The sound suits are made to be worn, to be danced in, to make sounds; you can find videos on YouTube of these works of art in action (do yourself a favor and watch one or two).

Haring honed his distinctive style while graffiti-ing subways and sidewalks of New York’s East Village in the heady days of the 1980s. His radiant baby and barking dog motifs are instantly recognized even today. He channeled that energetic street-style into a successful studio art practice, retaining the graphic clarity of his faceless forms and his embrace of social and political issues as his message. His self-portraits – instantly identified by the round glasses and mussed hair – were usually made as gifts for his wide circle of friends. In 1985, the AIDS epidemic was at its height and Haring was losing friends to this scourge; in 1988, he received his own AIDS diagnosis. He continued to address important topics such as exploitation, drug abuse, nuclear annihilation and AIDS in his art until his death in 1990.

$Condo's figures are misshapen and often grotesques, with protruding eyeballs and mutated limbs. Condo began his art career in the early 1980s in the East Village of Manhattan; he befriended Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and was part of Andy Warhol’s The Factory for two years. In “Double Heads on Red”, Condo continues his dissection of portraiture, mixing improvisation – addition, erasure and layering – with formal drawing technique. Traditionally rendered facial features are fractured to paint multiple expressions at the same time.$

Seated on a “throne” made from a bale of cotton, holding a cotton “scepter” and wearing a cotton “crown”, this regal sculpture is Saar’s vision of Topsy as a mature woman. Topsy, a character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, appears frequently in Saar’s work both in prints and sculpture. In Stowe’s novel, Topsy is powerless and meek. Saar has recreated the character as an empowered grown woman who is in control of her destiny.
