Jason Arday’s death has moved beyond the media storm that surrounded the final weeks of his life and into a formal legal process. A coroner has now opened an inquest into the death of the former Cambridge professor, who was found unresponsive at his Battersea home on August 14, just nine days after resigning from the university. Police told the coroner that the circumstances were not suspicious, but senior coroner Dr Julian Morris said the circumstances warranted an investigation and urged the press to remain mindful of its reporting and of Arday’s family.

The original report was hardly cautious. It did not present the alleged meeting as a possibility or an unverified claim. The headline declared that Harry and Meghan “had secret lunch” at the Horners’ Cotswolds home and went even further by asserting that the former Spice Girl and her husband were advising the couple on their supposed return to Britain.
