So basically it's ok - indeed desirable - for a university to retrospectively review the appointment of a black professor, but it's an outrage when an institution takes the same steps against a friend of the extreme right.

Letter opposing punishment of Nathan Cofnas for whistleblowing Dear Professor Petra De Sutter, As academics, we are concerned that Ghent University's disciplinary proceedings against Dr Cofnas appear to constitute retaliation, at least in part, for publicizing academic misconduct that occurred in British universities. An essential component of academic freedom is the ability to scrutinize the scholarship of other academics, regardless of their position or status. This must include the freedom to provide evidence of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism and fabrication. The pursuit of truth depends on rigorous self-policing by academics. We are also concerned that the University appears to be treating threats to academic freedom, whether from its own staff claiming distress or from external actors announcing boycotts, as grounds for disciplining the very individual targeted by those threats. Therefore we urge Ghent University to protect Dr Cofnas from being punished for exercising his academic freedom.

The irony about the disposable bbq ban is that retailers left with piles of the buggers will throw them away, upon which they'll be incinerated, and all that carbon contained in the coals will be released into the atmosphere thus making global warming even worse.

For many years now I've taken the view that flat earthers don't believe in a flat earth at all, but take intellectual pleasure in the challenge of arguing against an obvious fact. Starting to suspect that those pinhead dancers defending Trump (and now Badenoch) are of a similar mindset.

Question: parked my car in a public car park Tuesday evening. Have just noticed all this damage on the passenger side sill, including - bizarrely - a large rusty screw someone has inserted underneath the sill. The car is 15 years old. Why would they do jemmy off an old sill? Any ideas?

Just been to see a comedy / farce called The Truth in London. Areal O'Hanlon is very good in it. Weird, of course the Father Ted stuff was 30-odd years back, I really shouldn't have been so surprised how he'd aged.

As I get older (I'm 60) I'm starting to feel myself falling down the rabbit hole of vitamin supplements: My knees give discomfort when I run: solution - collagen supplements My calves can tighten: solution - magnesium supplements My GP advocated Vitamin D tablets for healthy bones. Feeling old.
