“At first,” she sneers. “They still knew.”

“They only — the president only told them after you left, the first time.” He lifts a hand in appeasement but she just glares at him, her own closing into a fist. “He didn’t want anyone to die, Eutrope. He had a plan.”

“That you knew. The whole time. So, tell me — was it fun for you all, to watch me act like a fool?” She places a hand over her chest, her eyes wide and beseeching, mocking. “Was I a good spectacle? Proper entertainment?”

“No, Eutrope —”

“That’s what he wanted, right? That’s what I keep hearing. That the president wanted to give the people a ‘good show’.” She drops the act and spits the words, scathing and disgusted. “So did I? Give a good show?”

Like an idiot, he mumbles out the words before he can stop himself. “You… deviated from the script.”

His shirt black, a leather harness strapped to his torso, bending over the curves of his chest and shoulders—buckles gleaming. His jacket crimson—fabric too fine for practicality, adorned with gold-rope trim, and looking as soft to the touch as a rosepetal.

Regal, foreboding. The presence of a man who was raised on commanding armies, not appearing on patios after hearing his name whispered softly to the wind.

Jazzele was—is—entirely too beautiful.

But here and now—she all but gleams with the light of something outright incandescent.

(She finds the whole affair somewhat horrifying, for some reason. Grinnaux has to step away when he notices her conspicuous absence at one point, eventually finding her restlessly pacing back and forth in his chambers, fretting over the frivolity of it all — as if that wasn’t the point. He has half a mind to simply push her down into his bed for the distraction alone — a thought she must glean for herself, judging by the warning look shot his way, the warmth that rises through her cheeks.

Which — really. At that point, he just commits.)
