An online chapter of Extinction Rebellion US. We’re here for folks who want to participate in climate action, but aren’t able to in person. Important links: https://linktr.ee/XRC2C

Change is coming to our social media page! We want to post what you need to know — mutual aid resources, action items, important news, and more. Today’s action item: If you live in the US, primaries are coming up. Ask your candidates about their stance on climate policies and environmental issues.

In Tehran, oil refineries are burning. Black rain falls from the sky. ceobs.org/black-rain-t... War has devastating consequences for the environment. Stay tuned to learn more about the connections between climate change and war, systems of government, insurance, food supply, and many more.

Black rain: the health and environmental risks from Tehran’s oil fires - CEOBS

Spring is coming, and prescribed fire season has started already in some parts of the country. Prescribed fire can reduce wildfire risk by removing hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, reduce invasive species, improve soil quality, and much more. Check out the images to learn more!

An image of a prescribed burn with the following text: “Q: What is prescribed fire? A: Prescribed fire is when a piece of land is set on fire on purpose. The fire is kept within designated borders and is usually lower intensity than a wildfire.” A designated fire border is shown in the picture with a line.An image of the aftermath of a prescribed burn with the words: “Q: Why would anyone light a fire on purpose? A: Prescribed fires can: Reduce fuels like dead trees, logs, and leaf litter, which makes future wildfires less intense; improve wildlife habitat; improve soil quality; destroy invasive species and help with reproduction of native species.”An image of a fire truck on a road next to a fire, with the words:
“Q: How do you keep a fire within a certain area? A: Firefighters dig control lines around the planned burn area, or use existing roads and trails as control lines. During and after the burn, they patrol the lines to make sure the fire doesn’t escape.”A comparison of post-prescribed burn and post-wildfire pictures, with a fair amount of trees still alive post-prescribed burn while almost all the trees post-wildfire are dead. The text reads:
Q: How is prescribed fire a climate solution? A: Prescribed fire is generally less intense than a wildfire, and it reduces the intensity of future wildfires. Less intense fire means less carbon released into the atmosphere, and more trees still alive to absorb CO2.”

Another climate solution spotted: Electric vehicle (EV) chargers in a parking garage in Denver, CO. EVs are a great idea for the planet, but they only work if the infrastructure is there. We need more charging stations in more public places to make EVs a preferred transportation alternative.

Good News! The High Seas Treaty, the world’s first legally binding international agreement to protect marine life beyond national borders and domestic jurisdictions has come into force. If we save the seas, we can save ourselves 🐋 1/2 www.forbes.com/sites/veroni...

Climate solution spotted! Cities across the US are providing e-bikes to give people a more carbon-friendly travel alternative to cars. In a world full of bad news, let’s take some time to acknowledge what we’re doing right. (Pictured here: New York City)

A row of approximately 50 e-bikes parked in their designated bike rack on the side of a city street.

Happy New Year from XRC2C! What’s your New Year’s climate resolution? Here are some ideas: - Join a climate activism org - Take public transit instead of a car - Talk about climate change. (When it’s trendy, people care!)

Give the gift of your time this holiday season and keep money out of the hands of large corporations contributing to climate change. A thoughtful, homemade gift, or just some quality time, can go a long way.

An image of two footprints that says “Which carbon footprint will you choose?” The larger footprint on the left says “Buying all your holiday gifts with credit” with a picture of some credit cards. The smaller footprint on the right says “Gifting loved ones time: time to talk or write or make a special thing” with a picture of a clock with a bow on top.
