Just finished Victor Pelevin's "The Helmet of Horror"! Part of the Canongate Myths series, it was a fast read. A group of strangers talk to each other on a chat channel, each trapped in a labyrinth, wondering when the minotaur arrives. Great philosophical novel! I want to reread soon! 🤔 #BookSky

The cover of Victor Pelevin's "The Helmet of Horror" - it's an abstract cover, most of which is taken up with a globular diagram of branches, similar to when you map a section of the internet, or part of the brain. The background has a lot of boxes, mostly square, sometimes rectangular or an L shape - they might be pixels, keys on a keyboard, or maybe genes.

Mystery Jukebox reminder. Kitty is back in Wisconsin, and will be allowing you to play 2 tokens. Listen and chat with our group. 5am -5pm US CDT ( 11am-11 pm UK).

Having a short story collection and a novel on the go at the same time means there's a chance I'll finish both on the same day! So, just finished Caleb Azumah Nelson's "Open Water". Absolutely gorgeous prose about falling in love, plus the trauma of living in a racist society... #BookSky

The cover of Caleb Azumah Nelson's "Open Water". On the top half, a portrait of a young Black man looking at the camera on a dull red background. On the bottom half, a portrait of a young Black woman looking downwards on a yellow background.

Just finished Clive Barker's "Books of Blood Vol. III"! I liked this more than Vol. II. Apparently one of the stories - a straight forwards monster romp called "Rawhead Rex" was turned into a dodgy looking movie in the 80s? Might have to search that out! 👹 #BookSky

The cover of Clive Barker's "Books of Blood Vol. III".

An image of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt being blown up is also part of a monstrous face, with eyes appearing behind her arms and the skirt being an upper lip, revealing sharp teeth underneath. A dressing room mirror with skulls instead of lightbulbs is behind her, and an evil looking Mickey Mouse with an eye hanging out of its socket is at her side.

Just finished Vonda N McIntyre's "The Exile Waiting". Really rather good - certainly felt fresher than most SF from 1975. Uses the same setting as "Dreamsnake", though explores different areas. Really wish she'd written more stuff in this setting! #BookSky

The cover of Vonda N McIntyre's "The Exile Waiting".

The image is mostly in shades of blue, so it looks like it might be underwater. There are a collection of hemispherical domes with portholes, and each dome is mounted on a column that looks like a strand of DNA

It's rare that I want to rewatch films soon after a 1st watch, but both of these psychedelic beauties compelled me to! 😵‍💫 Protagonists with tenuous grip on reality 🔊 Ego-obliterating dark ambient soundscapes 🫠 Irreality with torturous grip on protagonists #FilmSky

And now today I've finished Clive Barker's "Books of Blood Vol II"! As these didn't have the chance to traumatize me in my youth, I didn't find them quite as chilling as Vol I, but there was some good stuff in there, for sure. #BookSky

The cover of Clive Barker's "Books of Blood Vol II".

A cloudy sky and blasted landscape lies in the background. Filling most of the image in the foreground, a woman's face in profile giving the reader sideye. Her hair is kinda Bride of Frankenstein, and is decorated with little partly flayed, partly skeletal human figures. Her earring is a tiny skull hung by its hair.

Just finished Cormac McCarthy's "Child of God". I wanted something lightweight, and the subject matter certainly wasn't AT ALL lightweight! 💀 Still, the prose made for a very fast read - not much punctuation to slow things down! 🚀 #BookSky

The cover of Cormac McCarthy's "Child of God"

On a plain beige background with no image, there's blocky red and rust brown text giving the author, title and a pull quote:

CORMAC MCCARTHY
CHILD GOD

HIS PROSE, UNFAILINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND EXACT, CARRIES US INTO A DREAMWORLD OF ASTONISHING AND VIOLENT REVELATION - TOBIAS WOLFF
