Bumble bees can apparently play with balls, count, recognize faces, & perceive rhythm. A new study out today in @science.org argues they can also solve novel tasks spontaneously without explicit training, challenging the idea that such cognitive skills are exclusive to large-brained vertebrates.😲🐝🧪👇

Spontaneous problem-solving in bumble bees

Problem-solving using novel solutions without explicit training is often considered a hallmark of cognitive flexibility. We investigated whether bumble bees (Bombus terrestris) could solve a novel obj...

🚨New paper alert!! 🚨 In this work by Nadav Amir, with Uri Maoz, we fail to find evidence for ambiguous objects emerging slower/faster to awareness, but do find support for more symmetrical stimuli enjoying preferential access academic.oup.com/nc/article/2...

Mid-level perceptual features, and not ambiguity, accelerate access to awareness

Abstract. Current theoretical accounts of perception and high-level cognition suggest that awareness plays an active role in disambiguating incoming sensor

Really glad I could contribute to this excellent perspective paper. #Consciousness + #neuroethology + #animal-behavior An interesting mixture for a fun read :)

Our paper “Towards a neuroethological approach to consciousness” is out in Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B. Together with @talking-bat.bsky.social and Lucia Melloni, we suggest bringing Tinbergen’s framework into consciousness research.

📈🧠 We're looking for brains! 🧠📈 Postdoc + PhD positions are available to help pioneer fetal MEG with optically pumped magnetometers, measuring prenatal responses to sound and light to understand how we start making sense of the world even before we're born. 🐣 Please get in touch to hear more!
