I just completed my favorite gift buying excursion: books for the niblings are all acquired! To my delight, one is the right age for “Blueberries for Sal” and another for “Midnight in Chernobyl.”

We had a hilarious trick-or-treat moment. A little boy, dressed as a Power Ranger, was super excited and happy to be called a hero (he told us and we agreed) and get TWO pieces of candy that he gave me a big hug and a kiss. I was surprised and said thank you. (1/2)

Me, first opening Bluesky: Why are there all these takes about radioactive material in my feed this morning? (NB these takes range from excellent to weird to just plain wrong.) Me, after scrolling a bit: Ooooooh.

Anyone doing imaging/microscopy work want to write a wish list of free and low-cost dyes? Luke is AMAZING, super smart, super nice, and a general wizard with dyes and probes. 🧪

Hey #chemsky and beyond, with all that is going on, I am curious what expensive, high margin molecules we could provide to the community for free. What things do you use all the time, cost way too much, and would make a difference? Alexa Fluor 488 NHS? Other dyes? Other molecule?

Today in “why am I like this?” I decided to have friends over to help me optimize mushroom ravioli and egg nog (their job was tasting). 18 possible ravioli/sauce/garnish combinations, 4 nogs, two chocolate shortbread versions #ChemistsWhoCook

Three glass dishes. Top contains herb and garlic brown butter, middle contains parmesan cream sauce, bottom contains pesto. They are labeled with yellow Post-Its. Three large plates of homemade ravioli labeled with yellow Post-Its. Top is Marsala (mushroom marsala filling), middle is Red wine (mushroom filling with red wine), bottom is Mascarpone Lemon (mushroom with mascarpone and lemon zest). Two small plates of chocolate shortbread cookies with Post Its labeled -salt and +saltAn array of four egg nogs, 4 glasses of each (not filled very full) with an attractive color gradient. Each row is labeled with a Post-It stuck to the table. Top to bottom: Oberweis (commercial), Kenji Lopez-Alt, Alton Brown, Saveur.

I went back to my undergrad university to attend a symposium celebrating my (beloved) advisor’s 80th birthday. How did I not appreciate this Art Deco glory when I was a student? #ChemSky

A concrete facade at the entrance to a brick building. Above the doors is printed “Chemistry Annex” in very stylized font with decoration that looks a bit like test tubes in racks. On either side of the doors are Art Deco lanterns that appear to be hanging from columns carved much higher in the concrete.

I’ve been working on a route to [18F]-L-DOPA, and when anyone asks me about work, I’ve been telling them I am TRYING to make dopamine, but it’s not working well, and I’m kind of stressed about it. I think it’s hilarious. 🧪 #Chemsky

A novel twist on the typical nightmare: I’ve attended classes all semester, but somehow I’ve messed up the finals schedule and have missed nearly all of them and am about to fail most of my courses. Thanks, brain! Nice of you to mix it up every now and then!

🧪Entomologists, we are having a banner year for fireflies in the upper Midwest. What would be the best place to go watch a light show - forest, pond, prairie, etc? (Our front yard is pretty great, but we have a lot of nearby protected land.)

I often suspect that (rural) Michigan is the land time forgot, but sometimes I go places that confirm my suspicions.

A 80s style Pizza Hut building with “retro” (1967-1999) logo on the sign and the funny angled roof.

🧪 Interesting study - organic farming maintains/increases biodiversity in barley vs conventional methods. I feel like I have to be extra skeptical since it seems to confirm my personal prejudices - what did I miss?

Long-term study finds organic farming leads to adaptations in the genetic material in plants

Plants adapt genetically over time to the special conditions of organic farming. This has been demonstrated in a long-term study conducted at the University of Bonn.

Southwest Michigan. I’d never seen an aurora before, and now I’m spoiled with such a vivid show. 🧪

These are ads I come across occasionally. I don’t think they are AI (although it’s possible), but they always catch my eye in a “what’s wrong with this picture” kind of way. If I had organic chem lab students, I would be so tempted to spend a day dissecting these. 🧪 #Chemsky

An ad for perfume (potions and remedies?) showing the bottle amid a lab setup featuring pale yellow liquid. There is an upside down set funnel resting on a cork with no stopcock, a sidearm Erlenmeyer with a thermometer and glass funnel out the top and (alcohol?) flames coming from the funnel, and an incomplete glass manifold with no nose barbs or stopcocks. An ad for perfume (potions and remedies?) featuring a ludicrous lab setup using pale pink liquid. There is a volumetric flask with a 10 mL glass volumetric pipette with a too-small pink bulb resting in it. There js a distillation setup with a long path running down to a flat-bottom receptacle with a coil and open top. The distillation pot is sitting on a beaker containing a plant (herb?) with a sidearm with a small Pasteur pipette with a small pink bulb.A perfume ad (potions and remedies?) with a lab setup with ruby red liquid. It features a sep funnel with a glass funnel at the top emitting smoke, a PTFE stopcock with no washer and no pin for turning. There is a pear-shaped flask with a Vigreux column with what looks like plastic tubing inserted at the top and the sidearm. There is a setup I can’t describe with sparks (like a sparker) coming out the top. There is an inverted Petri dish containing what night be turmeric root.

Hey folks! I’m not much of a poster, so following chemists will be terribly disappointed! I work at a CRO, so I am seminonymous and can’t post much work stuff. That said, as a little intro, I’m an organic chemist who worked on antibiotics/imaging for TB and now works in radiochemistry.
