Render and ref for a creature design known as the Glassback. The goal was to design an apex predator that lived its life in a forest of crystals. It was inspired by frogs, leopards, owls, and chimpanzees; as well as iridovirus. #specbio #art #artist #creaturedesign #artistonbluesky #originalart

The "glass" on its back is in fact a symbiotic virus that controls some of its movements. Its blood is amoebocytic and patches up its injuries for a stylish kintsugi look. Its body is studded with crystal denticles to prevent it from being scratched by stray shards, and its teeth are sturdy enough to chew through crystal. It has suction cups on its hands and feet to climb the smooth-sided spires, as well as eight different stingers with three different types of deadly venom that can be deployed by them.

Upon the calm, sparkling green waters, a driftwood log floats on the surface. Hanging from it like floral chandeliers are the giant crinoids Seirocrinus. They have attracted many deep-bodied, yellow-and-striped Dapedium, who huddle in it for cover and food, but they in turn attract the plesiosaur Hauffiosaurus, with its shortish neck and large flippers. One by one they are picked off, and it is unclear as to when their hunger will be sated.

Hi Paul: It is a neat story. And the specimen is quite spectacular.
Actually though, the specimen is lowermost Cretaceous (new radiometric
dates) although some of the Chinese researchers believe the beds are
uppermost Jurassic. The beds are the same that are producing all of the
Confuciusornis specimens (including the ones with feathers). The little
dino is almost certainly a compsognathid and the feathers are relatively
short, preserved mostly along the neck and back with very short ones (which
actually look more like scales near the vent) along the top and the bottom
of the tail. The beds that produce these fossils are lacustrine, but have a
high content of volcanic ash. Fortunately, I have been away, so I haven't
heard a peep from the media. And in a few days I will be off to the SVP.

Oh boy, gosh, gee whiz, wow, hooray!!! More information, PLEASE! Is it
certain that these are really feathers, or just Pelecanimimus-type
whatever-they-ares? And how is Al Feduccia going to explain THIS one away??

Anyway - if the dino really does have genuine homologous-to-birds-type
feathers and is a compsognathid, and if compsognathids are really not as
close to Archaeopteryx in other ways as, say, Velociraptor, that must mean
that either feathers evolved at least twice or feathers must really have
been widespread in small theropods after all, doesn't it? That means I
don't have to retouch all my Greg Paul restorations?

I would also propose a hat's off to Gregory "Nobody ever listens
to me!" Paul who's proposed this for years. Many of the ideas he argues
may not pan out, but some of them- like this one, or speculation in PDW
about Oviraptor guarding its eggs- do with a vengeance...
Someone also said a while back that Oviraptor would look a lot
better with some feathers to help cover those eggs, I believe- a sentiment
I now have no qualms about agreeing with openly.
Wow. I guess now the question is, How far back do they go? This is
just @#%^$&^& incredible.... but it just begs to be answered whether
ornithopods had them too. Here's where the cladograms get really
interesting. Anything that fits in the clade uniting this animal and birds
will most parsimoniously be assumed to be feathered. I would guess that
would include T. rex, in which case we would do well to agree with (again,
yes, we DO listen from time to time!) the idea that the thing lost it's
feathers since it's size was more than adequate insulation. Everyone
realizes, of course, that this is the most ironclad evidence of endothermy
(at the very least, in one large branch of Dinosauria) you could ever ask
for. It just doesn't get any better than this.
Cripes. So that's our question, now- are they a specialized
feature of one branch of the dinosaur family tree (heheh- I just had a
thought- feathered segnosaurs. Now doesn't that look funny! Sorry,
George. ;) ) or do they perhaps go all the way back to the base or- god
only knows- back to pterosaurs, if pterosaurs are close enough? I'm having
trouble picturing feathers poking from between the scutes of a
Scutellosaurus... but hell, anything is possible now.

I'm not so much excited about it. I've suspected all along that AT
LEAST all maniraptors had feathers or some sort of integument. Small
dinos being similarly accrutremented is a logical idea. Given the
possible fur of pterosaurs and the "feather things" of longisquama, the
suspicion that feather like things (I'm just the king of terms today) is
plesiomorphic has always been in the back of my mind.

Come to think of it, I think I talked about all this in an article I
wrote for DOL.....

A herd of Megacerops, Merycoidodon, Mesohippus and Leptomeryx drink from a watering hole during a dry spell. Subhyracodon wallow in the mud, and an Alligator stalks the Mesohippus, who flee at its approach. After the cooling trend began, Eocene forests and jungles made way for subtropical savannahs and plains, allowing for the expansion of grasslands in the Miocene. We haven't quite reached this point in time just yet, but this dust storm is just the beginning of a climate trend that'll drag on for millions of years.

As they hatch, newborn Edmontosaurus are massacred by a pair of precocial baby T.rex. They were laid during the spring, and hatched only days after the asteroid hit, protected by layers of vegetation and soil. The two young T.rex hatched only a few weeks before, and outlived their parents by hiding in a cave. They now hear a cacophony of cheeping and squealing; coming across a litany of helpless young in a low-food environment, they massacre the brood like a fox in a henhouse.

#SurvivingEarth ep 5 is fine. They really went hard on the music and scenery for this one, the ambience overall is kinda glorious. I think the "ma saves babies" plot is perhaps being overdone, but that might be bc the narrator keeps calling them "babies" instead of calves or hatchlings etc. (1/?)
